Indoor Gardening

A dear British lady once told me to throw out design rules and to think of a room as a garden. For me, it was a major lightbulb moment. I had always wondered how the English had mastered the art of cozy vignettes, and the gardening analogy made perfect sense. What better place to learn about scale and colors?

While arranging furniture on your "lawn," you might wish to create a "hedge" to divide the area. A sofa, piano, or a large table can divide a large space, or create layers in a smaller one. You can keep adding hedge rows, making cozy places to write letters, read, play cards, or serve afternoon tea (a lovely ritual, even for one).
Walls and windows are the background "vista," with art and draperies drawing the eye upward. Rugs lay out the geometry of your space, rather like the border of a flower bed. Folding screens can further divide a space.

Finally, study beautiful flowers. Pay attention to texture, scale, and repetition of colors. Better yet, make friends with a gardener! A good way to begin is to fly over to RMS and study the way Tootsie creates magic.
Hope the sun is shining wherever you are today.

  1. OMG!!!!! Gollum! thanks for the incredible compliment! If I wasn't a huge fan already this would have sealed the deal. I have had a rough week at RMS, and this is the "good thing" I needed. Thanks again....I shall be grinning from ear to ear all day long!

  2. Well you totally lost me on that one! I hate gardening, thank goodness DH enjoys it! I understand what you are saying but I guess feel lost because I know so little about it! I find it so much easier designing "insides"...wouldn't it be a boring place though if we all did, the exact same thing inside and out? Things that make you say hmmmm~~~French;)

  3. That IS a wonderful way to look at things! I would have never thought of it :)

Since no one knows if you are a man or a woman and we don't know whether or not you have children, I do know that you had/have a mother, soooo...

    Happy Mother's Day ;)

  5. Thanks again Gollum for sharing your insight. It does make sense. (Oh how I wish I had Tootsie's 'green thumb'. She is very humble when it comes to her talent as a gardner and always so willing to assist or share her knowledge. To me that is truly a sign of a 'master'.)

  6. Gollum, I've been enjoying your blog for a couple of weeks now but have never commented. Your style of writing is amazing and you say what we all feel but aren't quite sure how to put into words so I thank you for that! I do have a question for you. How in the world do you get all of the beautiful artwork on you site. Is there a special thingy on the computer or is it on your camera or are you magic? Carol

  7. Carol, I asked that same question several days ago, but Gollum never answered. I think "he" wants to keep it a secret! :-) Susan

  8. Many are photographs of my home, or previous homes. For the fun stuff, I use Adobe, but you can get the similar results from Microsoft Picture It, etc.

  9. I am a complete waste in the garden, and in fact, in the rental house we're in now, the only things I have blooming are Lily of the Nile (because they had already been planted here) and one big pot of impatiens. That's it for me and flowers! I could probably get into the whole gardening thing more if it wasn't so flippin' hot here all the time, but I just can't stand to be out in the blazing sun getting my hands dirty. I'll leave that up to the professionals. Or in my case, my husband.

You were so right to compliment Tootsie. She's got an amazing talent with her green thumb and I never get tired of looking at her yard. Have a wonderful day tomorrow, whether you're a mom, or just have a mom!

  13. Hello ladies, I dug around the web and finally found the famous gollum. I've found your blog interesting and somewhat comical. But off that subject, I just realized ya'll might have an answer I'm looking for about a wild rose bush. Can they be dug up and replanted? I have one in my yard and it's absolutely because but I need to move it. Anyone know if it would survive a move? I have no idea how old it is.

  14. Hi Gollum,
I think I have a new term for you to add to the lingo for RMS. I saw an example of a "drive by rating"...you know...these unclickable meanies who drive by your RMS site, fire off a painful comment, and then speed off into the night leaving no trail for the winged monkeys to track them down! UGH!!! It didn't happen to me but to a very nice, always generous, sweet soul on RMS. Maybe it's time for a new rule at RMS...you can't leave a comment unless you also have a room posted. Susan

  15. Congrats to our Tootsie girl.. And rightfully deserved. Her gardens and style come from the heart. As most of our homes and styles do. It's so unfortunate that many RMS comments fail in such a big way showing that now. It's certainly not the most fun place to be like it was when I first came on board. Our homes, and style reflect our personalites and so do the comments we so generously leave. Those that post the ugly are showing their true stipes and need to learn how to show a bit more class. I've just discovered your blog and can tell you I believe I'm going to become a regular visitor. Thanks so much for sharing the true light of what decorating is all about, inside and out.

  16. Hi Gollum :)

I keep checking back here for a new post. I'm so glad you came by :)

The Old Bag has regular pub fair (mostly fish) and while it's good, we really go there for the ambiance. I had breaded tilapia with a creamy garlic sauce that was great and I think everyone else had fish sandwiches.

    I'll keep checkin' back....

  17. Re your pictures: I'll leave this posting up to your descretion Gollum as to whether you want to include it or not. Another good Photo Editing Program is the " Microsoft Platinum Edition V.2001 Picture It Publishing" (PIP). Though it is an old version, it is extremely versatile (better than the newer one). It can be easily nagivated, has extensive options, is adaptible for later versions of MS Windows/Vista plus can still be used with many Printer Programs (Lexmark/HP/Cannon etc). If someone is lucky enough to find one in a Garage Sale or on EBay it will be worth their while to purchase it :)
