Before we get started on today's "Quest," let's eat every crumb of this walnut coffee cake:

Now it's time to hit the road on a quest. It's a gift for a dear friend, a special cat cup. It can be old or new, preferably cafe au lait sized with flat handles on either side to rest one's thumbs. Preferably, it should have a cat in the cup's bottom.
This will be a snap, I thought. It's not an obscure cat artifact. It's a cup. Easy peasy. Right? But not too easy, I hope, because I love quests--especially if I am looking for a friend.
First, I made a beeline for the glass cases with the pricey stuff. No cups or mugs, but here's an old bronze cat.
This is an unusual cat figurine, and I can't see the price. The cat has an odd yellow glass tail.
This black cat is adorable, but he's not in the bottom of a cup.
Cat mugs! Success! But there are no cats in the bottom. So we move on.
I buy a little bag of cat nip for my friend's cat, Chicklet.
This case is filled with antique cat items, and lots of cat and dog jewelry.
A toy sleeping cat.
Cute cat plates.
A white cat
Dog art, mostly new, but very cute for a dog themed room:
Vintage dog art.
This oyster dish is $85. No discernable markings. My father grew up on the Gulf Coast, and I am specially fond of oyster dishes.
I'd hoped these cream soup bowls would have a cat somewhere. ::Sigh:: No luck. I'm starting to panic.
Now I'm getting warmer--cat mugs. Alas, no cat inside the mugs.
Dejected, I wander over to the cat perfume bottles and try to breathe in the fumes of "My Sin." (For those under 50, "My Sin" was dimestore perfume.)
More dog art
a glamor puss
Dog figurines
I look at this blue pitcher each time I come to this store.
Then I wander over to the vintage jewely case...and almost fall in love with the evening bags. While I don't smoke, I do love the cool, Art Deco cigarette case.
Years ago, a friend gave me a Limoges box. My eyes cross when I look at the triple digit prices on this collection.
The shop owner wasn't there, but I left her a note, asking if she could help me find a cat cup. And I'll check on Ebay. This is part of Questing, isn't it? But sometimes it makes me work up an appetite. So, in my mind's eye, I fly over to Austria, and sample some pastries--no calories, of course. Won't you sit down and join me?
I went to Vienna once and I have never seen so many wonderful pastries. I felt it was my obligation to sample quite a few and they were even better than they looked...now I want one and the chances are not good of finding one in Massachusetts at midnight, no siree!

What a fun visit to the antique shop! I think that if you always seek out the blue pitcher, then perhaps its calling out your name!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter had one of those toy sleeping cats. It looked so real and would freak out her guests, some of whom would say, "Uh, I think there is something wrong with your cat," because they couldn't see it breathing! lol

Oh the pasteries were great in Vieques P.R. There was only one lady on the island that made this one pastery. We went to her home and got 6. Heeee They were round and about 5 inches wide filled withjam and had nuts in the dough, yum! Kathy
ReplyDeleteGollum, what a deligtful post this morning! Poor little friend will get no cat mug at this time! :( But you're a genious and I know you'll find one! Love the tour of that gret shop and yes, please I'll have a pastry! Would you please pour me a cup of tea to go with it? Blessings...Shelia ;)
ReplyDeleteYUMMY!!! You can keep the cats stuff just give me the pastries. These look so "Sinful" to me and would be great with my coffee right now. Good luck finding your cat in the bottom cup. Sounds like its going to be hard to find. We have a shop in town called the Cat House and I bet they have one...I'll look for you Gollum.. Well happy hunting. Hugs and smiles
ReplyDeleteDeare GRACIOUS GOLLUM-GIRL~~~ May I PLEASE use your space here, "just for a se", to say "HI, FRIENDS!" to everyone here??? We had to leave for a short trip last week, w/ little notice, and I finally just got hold of a computer (!)~ sooo, wanted to say hello to all and that I "miss everyone"!!! Should hopefully be back home, AND on line, later next week ~~~ Am enjoying "catching up" on reading your always-wonderful columns, and the entertaining comments of all the gals (n' guys?!)~~~ Thinking of you all and sending big, warm hugs your way from DC!!! Love, LINDA (AKA "Mom...")... (P.S. THANKS, GG!!!)
ReplyDeleteMaybe if Dr. Seuss had written "Cat In The Cup" we would be having more success finding the illusive object?
ReplyDeleteNow what made you think it was going to be easy to find a mug or tea cup with a cat INSIDE it????? LOL
ReplyDeleteJustine :o )

ReplyDelete:-) LOL Your mention of "My Sin" opened a creaky, cob-webbed door in my brain and I could suddenly see those little blue bottles of "Evening in Paris". Anyone else remember those? Susan

Omg....I'm SOOOO thrilled~!! Andrea Bocelli is one of my favorites. I can't thank you enough for the beautiful selection of music Gollum. It's all just so heavenly. :-)
ReplyDeleteLast night we visited Waterfire in Providence, Rhode Island. Designs comes in many versions and this is one very unique example of design. They light many caldrons of firewood over the Providence River while playing the most exotic music I've ever heard. If you would like to get a glimse of this beautiful yet unusual combination of fire and water check out this website.

Thank you again Gollum for making such beautiful music that blends perfectly with your column.
hello! that toy sleeping cat brought back a memory. My mom sent each of my two little girls a cat like that. My trusty guard dog ( who thinks she is a cat) took them away and wont let the girls have them. she cleans them, and should the girls touch them, she acts like a mother who's babies are being handled! It is very silly...good thing the kids don't mind sharing with her!
ReplyDeletegood luck in your quest...I hope you find what you are looking for...just not right away...I love shopping with you!
Sorry you couldn't find that special cat cup and I know I wasn't much help but I just couldn't pull myself away from all those wonderful pastries. LOL Another day of great music, thanks Gollum.
ReplyDeleteIs it too late to sign up for the bus to Lynne's gift shop? If not please sign me up. Gollum, I'll say you must have way more will power than me. I would have that pretty little blue pitcher in my hands so fast you wouldn't believe it. And that screen the other day, couldn't you see that in that light French dove gray color? For California prices it was a steal. Well, I guess that is why I am covered up with too much stuff at my place, just no will power for the things that speak to me. I just wanted to also say what a lovely job you did in presenting Susan's story, I still feel so touched by it. Cindy
ReplyDeleteMmmmm, maybe some Bavarian Torte? I'll keep my eyes open for the cat mug, you never know. Moonlight and Magnolias!!! I have thought of so often since the sweet tribute to your Mom. I too suffered from horrible mental illness, there, I said it. If I could I would wrap my arms around you , it would be a hug from your Mother. As a Mom who struggled and was fortunate enough to come out on the other side I know how she felt, and how you feel. Ahhh, Evening in Paris, if Paris truly smelled like that, they would'nt be so famous!
ReplyDeleteOh how I enjoyed this excursion today! The Cameo Brooch and the Perfume Bottles were particular temptations. I'm sorry you couldn't find a Cat in a Cup, but in my internet browsing I did come across one in clear Crystal. It was listed as a 'Darling Vintage Child's Stippled Dog and Cat cup'. (Each image was on one side and if clear crystal I would imagine they'd be visible on the inside. Would this count as 'a cat in a cup'?) Oh the coffee cake was also delicious. Have a nice evening!
ReplyDeleteHi Gollum :)
ReplyDeleteI have two porcelin baby cups that have painted frogs in the bottoms of them, but no cats. Maybe you should look for children's drinking cups?? I think my aunt bought them at Tiffany's.
Thank you for ruining my diet, btw ;)
hugs,
rue
Love to you too mom!!
ReplyDeleteLifeinRedShoes...hope you can you feel me hugging you right back!!! Appreciate so much that you shared your struggle...and so thankful you came out on the other side. I know your daughters are also very proud of your bravery and strength. You, my dear, are definitely a Steel Magnolia! Love to you! Susan
ReplyDeleteI loved reading about your hunt for the cat cup. I can relate to visualizing exactly what I want to find. I've told clerks "This probably doesn't exist, but this is what I want." Does it seem that dog-themed items are easier to find cat-themed? Glad some helpers have suggested how to find what you're looking for. You'll know it's right when you see it, but you may have to relinquish a couple of the specifications. Fieldstone/Pam
