At Home With Sasha

Several weeks ago, I invited Sasha, one of RMS's most beloved members, to spend a day with us in Gollumland. Many of you may remember that Sasha always had encouraging words for RMS members; she was supportive, wise, and kind. When it became unbearable on RMS, many of us fled or went into hiding, but Sasha kept her rooms on RMS, no matter the stars or ratings.

Sasha's home is absolutely beautiful, and it reflects the inner and outer beauty of its owner. During those dark, troubled days at RMS, Sasha took a stand, and refused to allow the meanies to chase her away. She (along with so many other much loved RMSers) became a symbol of all that is good in this world. Her rooms were a haven, where the RMS community could find a glimmer of sanity and touch base with each other. Sasha's uploaded photos became much more than a "space." They were a calm, nurturing oasis in a dry, whirling vortex. Her kindness was already well known, but her bravery became an inspiration to us all.

Okay, I'll stop talking and let Sasha take you on a tour of her beautiful lakeside home.

"Hello, everyone--here I am, Sasha."

'
and here are the loves of my life, my grandchildren Rylee and Logan.
Here is Logan"

'
and Rylee, at her first formal dance recital"

"I share my home with my three furkids Sophie, Clancy and Janice. Janice is the cat (her picture is below). Sophie is the black dog, and Clancy is blonde."

"I think Mom of a German Shorthair and several others will remember the night they were up with me waiting and worrying with me the night Clancy got out. He did come home about 3:00 in the morning."

"Here's the guest room, with Janice Joplin (the cat) taking a snooze."

A bathroom

The screened porch--my favorite spot:

This is the lake I live on:

Next are fish from my back yard:

"I didn't realize I had such a thing for hats. I guess this is my signature, every room seems to have a hat!"

"These are just some odds and ends. The first picture is my favorite thing and it was free, it came out of an old Fl. bungalo and this was the shutter to cover the window, actually the house had no windows, only wholes cut for windows, this shutter was the only protection from the outdoors."

"The next picture is Christmas last year, I love decorating for Christmas, this is one time of year you can really get away with having too much, lol."

"The third picture is the first gourd I ever made and the only one I own, I have made and sold hundreds of them thru the years."

"The next picture is of a mirror I just made last week."

"The next one is just a favorite table setting of mine."

"I have had to think about what my decorating philosophy really is and I guess I will have to say it is " Never be satisfied," for me anyway. I feel sometimes that contentment brings with it stagnation and doesn't allow your creativity to grow.

"I would also say 'learn your style'.. Are you a cave dweller or a sky person? A sky person likes open, airy, uncluttered spaces and cool colors. A cave dweller ( which is me) likes warm, intimate and cozy settings. Determine what you are and go from there.

"Also I don't buy the "less is more" thing, I don't think that is always true. I think it really depends on personal style and preferences. Like Meryl Streep in "Out of Africa," I like my things.

"I also believe a good room cannot be done over night, it is a sort of evolution and it takes time to collect the things you love. Avoid the cookie cutter look, always make your rooms personal. Whimsy is good too.

"Always go for bigger accessories when given a choice.

Finally, remember what the eye gets used to seeing it doesn't take notice of, anymore, so move your things around from time to time."

"Gollum, here is my recipe, this is the best fudge I have ever eaten and so easy to make! Great for chocolate lovers and people who do not like to cook ( like me) you would never guess it has cheese in it. Love it! I am telling you that stuff is wonderful--the best stuff since grits.lol"

SASHA'S CHEESE FUDGE

8 OZ. BOX OF VELVEETA CHEESE
2 STICKS LAND OF LAKES BUTTER
1 TSP VANILLA
1/2 CUP COCOA
2 BOXES POWDERED SUGAR
1 CUP CHOPPED PECANS OR WALNUTS ( I USE MORE THAN ONE CUP)

Melt cheese and butter in large sauce pan over low heat, remove from heat, add vanilla and stir well, add cocoa and stir until mixed well, sift sugar into cheese mixture, stir in nuts. Spread into 9 x 13 glass pan and cover with foil, cool in fridge.

Hi, it's me, gollum. I wanted to share several more pictures that have appeared on the blog:

Sasha, my dear, I want to thank you for opening your beautiful home and sharing facets of your life. Our homes are where we live our lives--and everything within those walls reflect our spirits, as Sasha's spaces prove.

---------------------------------------------
I wanted to give you an update about the snake: my brother says it's a copperhead; my sweetheart wants it to be a water snake. So we don't know. Just the other day I was standing on the ledge, cleaning the fountain (the spickets) with a coat hanger, and I kept wading into the water to cool off. LOL That won't happen again! :-)

Family matters are taking me away from my desk, and I won't be posting anything the rest of the week. But I will be with you in spirit.
Love to all,
Gollum

Thank you , gollum for featuring my friend, Sasha's home. I really enjoyed the tour. Her home looks so peaceful, relaxing and comfortable and I just love it. I wouldn't mind just lounging all day in her porch overlooking the lake.

  5. Darling Gollum, Thank you for giving us a closer look at yet another great lady from the RMS world. I was fairly new to RMS when Sasha lost her beloved Greyhound statue in her living room. It was so funny all of the condolences she received and then the poor innocent newcomers that came to her space thinking that everyone was talking about a real pet that had passed on.
Sasha has a great heart and she is one tough cookie to have withstood all of the trouble that she's had to deal with on RMS. I've always loved her home and I hope there is a tutorial on that new mirror she made!
Thanks again to both Sasha and you Gollum for sharing this with all of us, your loyal fans.
I hope that whatever is taking you away is of a pleasant nature or that everything will be fine if it is not.

  8. This is an exciting day for all of us to finally get to "see" our good friend Sasha. To say that her home is beautiful would be an understatement. To say that SHE is beautiful would be an even bigger understatement! I have looked at her spaces over and over...the WARMTH and ELEGANCE of her home is unsurpassed! And Sasha, I love your advice on thinking about if you are a "sky dweller" or a "cave dweller". Makes ya go hmmmmmm?! :-) Sasha, I admire your bravery, your commitment to your friends and family, but most of all just you! Love ya! And to Gollum, thank you for showing one of RMS' "greats" and enjoy your week ahead. We will feel a little (or should I say VERY) lost and will miss you!

  9. Sasha my sneaky friend *winks* You didn't even "hint" to me that you were going to be featured here!! Girl I couldn't be happier for you! You are one of the nicest and "most real" people on RMS. You know I love ya girl! And your house is ALMOST as amazing as you!
Also not just saying that because you could be my sister *winks* Gollum thank you for featuring my friend Sasha. I've said it before but it bears repeating. You seem to know all the BEST people!...yep......you know it's coming.....*winks* Hahaha!! Vanna

  12. I've always loved Sasha's style. Thank you for sharing not only more of her lovely home but her beautiful self as well with us. Sasha was hit extremly hard on RMS during those "dark times". It's a port in a storm whenever one visits her gorgeous home. Thank you Sasha.
Gollum's snakes entered my dreams last night. I barely looked at the snake in the picture because I'm deathly afraid of them. Hopefully all snake related dreams are done and gone now. But alas, our dearest Gollum will be taking a short leave. Family always comes first, but when you return to blogland just know that your adoring fans will always be here.
    Have a wonderful week.

  13. So wonderful to see my good friend sasha on gollum today. We have gone through the fire together and it made us even better friends. I love her dearly and had never seen her face! Sasha you are beauiful! I will be wanting one of those santas, as you remember that is my favorite thing at Christmas, "hand made santas". This was a joy to read . Thank you sasha and my dear friend gollum. We will miss you! vickydarnell

  14. Good morning Gollum :)

I've always thought Sasha's home was beautiful. She belongs in a magazine... Traditional home, House Beautiful, etc. The trolls of RMS really did an undeserving number on her and I was very impressed with how she handled it. She deserves this recognition :)

I'll miss you Gollum. I hope it's nothing awful that you're leaving for.

    Hugs to all and you!

  15. Hello Sasha! You know this is one of my most favorite homes right? After all so many elements just belong in my house, so if and when she is ready to change things up please send it all my way;) I never noticed the hats but what an amazing touch that is everywhere! French;)

  16. Sasha!!! Your home is lovely!!!! I would love to go fishing right outside of my house!!! :)

  17. You couldn't have chosen a nicer lady or more wonderful home to feature today. Sasha and her home has been a positive inspiration to so many. I recall when Clancy went AWOL and the episodes of her lovely spaces being attacked by a Troll and an invisible specific Winged-Monkey (?) coming deservedly to her aid.
I'm happy that she was one, that stood her ground and never pulled her spaces. (Sasha, I am still waiting for you to post pictures of the tablescapes that you did for your Son's wedding...smiles).

Gollum: The only thing I know about snakes, is that I don't like them!!!!! I'm afraid I would not rest until I hunted him down and transported the little reptile to another location. You are braver than I. Hope your family matters are not of a serious nature and that you have an enjoyable week.

  18. I've always loved her home and style so this is really cool to meet Sasha!

  19. Gollum, thanks so much for highlighting one of the brightest lights of RMS. Sasha is a dear friend to all who are lucky enough to meet her. Sasha...loved seeing more of your beautiful home, wonderful grandchildren and your sweet, four-legged family members. :-) That lake view is amazing and the size of those fish...WOW! I can't wait to try the fudge recipe. Thanks so much for sharing the great decorating tips, too! :-) Love to you, Susan

  22. SASHA...... When can I move in???? lol ;) I love your home and I'm glad that I wasn't around when there was trouble on RMS, I'm afraid the Irish and Italian in me whould have 'boiled up' and I wouldn't have been very lady like, in my comments, to the spoilers. I may not stick up for myself, but I'm like a lioness when it comes to protecting my family and friends.
Speaking of 'lioness' our very favorite cat was named Sasha. She was wonderful and lacked any of the finicky way of most cats. So when I see your name it always makes me smile. :)

Gollum and Sasha, thank you so much for sharing.

Gollum, I too will be having a busy weekend. Hospitality Meeting here at my house for our church, they meet here quarterly. Then 10 guest arriving later that night for the weekend. :O I'm glad I won't be missing any of your posts.

I'll have to pass on the new recipe I just made for the meeting. It's different and easy.

    Ciao

  23. Thank you Sasha - your home is LOVELY. I've looked at your photos on RMS many times, but this is even better.
Speaking of RMS - I have just posted my very first photos on RMS and I would love for you - and Gollum and the rest of you regulars - to take a look if you get a minute, and let me know what you think, especially if you have any suggestions. They are listed under kbgnc@aol ("Master" Bedroom). Thanks again for sharing your beautiful home and family with us! Karin

  24. Dear Gollum, I loved today's special edition on another RMS Decorating Star! What is unique about Sasha's style is that although she lives on a lake in Florida--and the water theme is highlighted with the sailboats and conches and starfish--it's not tropical here. Her British Colonial home could easily be on the shores of Puget Sound. Or Lake Michigan. Or in Key West. Even the views outside lack palms and Spanish moss. Sasha is multi-talented as seen in her gourd art, the mirror she designed, and her accessorizing. It is obvious that her spaces on RMS still bear the beatings from being downrated, bless her heart. Sasha is truly an elegant lady and so deserving of your tribute! Gollum, we'll miss you this week. Hope everything goes well. Fieldstone/Pam

  28. I just want to thank everybody for the wonderful and sweet comments. When I say I am overwhelmed I truly am. Yes, there has been some rough and trying times on RMS for some of us, but to be honest I am grateful for what happened. I have gained so much more than a good rating could have ever given me. To all my sweet RMS friends that were there for me I feel so blessed to have you in my life. Their friendship means more to me than all the stars in the world and I just want to say Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Love ya"ll!!! Sasha

  30. Another great RMS inspiration Gollum, your blog just get's better and better, Sasha has a truly lovely home and is a lovely person, I was thinking what Sasha said about Christmas and I agree.

Christmas was also my favourite time of the year on RMS, everyone posted their trees, decorations, tablescapes etc, etc, it was wonderful to see and there was a really nice atmosphere at RMS at that time.

Gollum I am gonna miss you, hope all is well, see you soon, Kathy.

  34. It feels like a life-time ago when my friend Sasha first dropped by my family room and asked about the mirrors flanking my fireplace. We bonded over being "more is more kind of girls", and the tragic demise of her beloved greyhound. I felt so bad for her, I went out shopping to see if I could find one to replace it, but only found a trojan horse instead. I remember thinking to myself that this must be a girl in her twenties, fresh out of design school with an amazing eye for accessorizing, full of spunk and style, who had a wonderful sense of humor that kept me in stitches! When she snapped that picture of herself and emailed it to me explaining that she was a blond grandma with a love for decorating almost as big as her love for her amazing family, I was even more impressed! I have from day one admired her style, spirit, and huge heart. It's been a privilege to have gotten to know her, and bounce ideas off of. A wonderfully talented woman, truly deserving of this beautiful tribute! Love ya girl, Jules:)

  35. Gollum - Thank you for the WONDERFUL spotlight on Ms. Sasha! Of many highlights I have personally enjoyed and appreciated from my time on RMS, meeting and interacting with Sasha is at the top of the list. She surely has her own individual style, as well as being a true class act. She could be the inspiration to help warm your home, or a welcoming shoulder to lean on to warm and mend your heart. Thank you for better exposing her and her wonderful talents, her beautiful home and those adorable furry ones (yes, and non-furry ones!) to the RMS universe! - clyde / aka winterpark

  40. Every time I have viewed a room in Sasha's home, I fall in love, and this is no exception-just more rooms at once (Oh, I'm SO in love). I had noticed her signature hats in some RMS postings. I thought it made it look so natural-like she just came in and placed her hat and the hat ended up looking like a lovely part of the decor (unlike when I dump my shoes somewhere when I come in the door!) Her rooms are even more beautiful when viewed all at once, instead of having to click, click, click to get to them. For those who have seen my postings on RMS, if I'm still around at Christmas-time, you'll see just how much I agree with Sasha's advice about Christmas being a "more is more" time. Good advice Sasha. Of course, I never let it stop me that it wasn't Chrismastime. Sasha's rooms look so inviting but not one bit cluttered, even with a hat thrown across an ottomon. Thank you for giving us this look at her beautiful home. Laurie a/k/a Bargainhuner

A screened porch with fabulous waterfront views and treasures within including the sass of zebra and leopard all showcasing Sasha's style of relaxed sophisticate combined with quirky chic. Wrap that together and what you've got is a symphony of style! A home as beautiful as Sasha herself.

***Oh, GOLLUM, GOLLUM, GOLLUM and SASHA, SASHA, SASHA!!!*** We just ret'd from a few "get out of the Tucson heat(!)" days in the mountains ~~~ stayed in an uber-charming 1920's stone B&B, w/ a stream below, n' surrounded by nothing but the grannnnd beauty of God's country~~~ the mountains n' sky n' incredible joys of "The Rim" CC/Golf Course and community! And THEN, to return home n' be treated to the DELICIOUS sights of "The SASHA'S" most MAHHHHVELOUS beach home, especially after looking at FAB mountain homes, is like I "died and went to heaven"! (Even putting in a load of laundry doesn't bother me right NOW!!! Grins!). The ONNNNLY "NEGATIVE" is, "HOW CAN WE LIVE WITHOUT A DAY OF GOLLUM, let alone MORE than just a DAY?!?!?! YIKES!!!"~~~~ OMG, I died and went to ____!"~~~ Makes me feel like "the bad witch" in the WIZARD of OZ... "You wicked little girl!!! I'm melllllllttttttiiinnng..."~~~~~~ Smiles!). Seriously tho, you SOOOO deserve some "TIME OFF 4 GOOD BEHAVIOR!", dahhhlin' GOLLUM!!! Buuuuut, hurry back, pleeeeaseee? (That's SOOOO selfish, I KNOW! 46. Hi Gollum, Thanks for the tour with SASHA and for the opportunity to get to know her a little better. I'm so impressed that you,SASHA, are closer to my age (a child of the 50's) than I would have imagined. There's a lot to be said for being "young at heart". What am I saying.... not quite ready for hip replacement yet! I love how gutsy you are and for standing your ground when the Trolls tried to take you down. I've always admired your interiors and it's so nice to be able to put a face with a name.
Gollum, hope that your "family matters" are not anything terribly serious. We will miss you. I'm going through withdrawl completely. First vacation and then my internet provider was hit by lightning and hundreds of Illinoisans were without service. ughhhhh! We are all with you in spirit as well. Can't wait for your return! Carol

  47. Hello Gollum,

I was so delighted to see Sasha's beautiful home showcased on your blog today...thank you, Gollum!

What can I say about Sasha's home/style? Well, I just love it all, I love the warm rich colors...the special attention she gives to each and every detail...all of her beautiful furniture and lovely accessories...however what I love most about Sasha's home is the warm, timeless ambience of "days gone by" kind of feel that I always get when visiting her home!!! The very first time I visited her home on RMS...that was my first thought...I felt like I had stepped back into time...when life presented itself with a grace and gentility...qualities that become more and more rare in our present day!!! I do believe that our homes are a direct reflection of who and what we are...Sasha definitely possesses those fine qualities!!! Not to mention that she is one talented lady!!! I just adored seeing her photo...now being able to picture her pretty face as we visit!!! Thank you Sasha for sharing your beautiful and unique home...your family (ohhh myyy...those babies are precious!!!)...and for sharing you!!!

Dear Gollum...I pray that your time off from "blog-land" finds you rested and enjoying your family!!! Warmest wishes...Chari (Happytodesign)
