Les Détails

When I was a small girl, my mother would take me "junking." Our favorite place was Sweet Georgia Brown's--a sagging, white clapboard house with a deep porch. Scattered on the weedy lawn were old washing machines, bathtubs, and an odd, concrete menagerie. This was way back in the early 1960s, when you could find huge Limoges platters for a dollar, when a dusty painting could turn out to be signed by Grandma Moses.

My mother had a passion for silver, and she set beautiful, detailed tables. In my neck of the woods, it's getting harder to find silver. I treasure the pieces I inherited from my grandmother.

Little dressmaker details--like these frogs--turned a frumpy coverlet into something interesting. Here's the "before" picture:

I use egg cups for little vases

And I put egg cups atop books

I inherited my grandmother's teacups--here's my favorite

I also have a passion for dog vases.

Here, a punch bowl becomes a vase

I've been collecting salt and pepper shakers since I was a child. I still haven't found a mate for my one lobster claw shaker. lol

I have several glass candlesticks, and one Christmas I put them all together on the dining room table and added silver ornaments (with museum putty) and candles. When the afternoon sun hit the glass, the arrangement glowed.

I love glass bunnies--anything glass, actually.

I also love crosses, old and new.

Odd dishes add up to an interesting tablescape

Pitchers and more salt and pepper shakers

An old covered dish and red transferware

Vases, and a pretty pink and green bowl

What's your passion? What details make you happy? And what do you collect, or want to collect?

  1. Red transferware, I hang it on the walls in my dining room, drives my husband crazy. Anything shaped like a heart, to remind me of my many loves. Birds, they represent freedom.

  5. I love salt and pepper shakers. I'm still looking for the kind my aunt had. They were chefs, and when you shook them the head squeeked! My dad hated them, but I thought they were so cool. You gave me an idea for my egg cups, too. Thanks!

  6. Swoonnnnnn! I love your dish collections, and to answer your question of what I collect, LOL, dishes, dishes and more dishes. I love setting a pretty table for me and my friends and family. Tablesetting gives me a easy creative outlet that I don't have in my professional life.

I am soooo enjoying your blog :)

  7. G, I have 2 of your 4 books. I have never been biten by the collector bug, I think because I don't like the more is more look and my home has never had enough storage for alot of collections. I did think I needed to start collecting something so my kids could buy me easy gifts, so after much thoguht I decided on waterford "hand painted" Christmas ornaments, small, can be put away easily and I have really enjoyed looking for them on the cheap! I never pay full price of them and the hunt is the fun part of collecting them. I enjoyed looking at all your eye candy today. vickydarnell

Rabbits, roosters, silver, chairs, old wood, rugs, chandeliers, lambs,'crystal, birds, frogs, dishes, bowls and planters, tables and on and on. The crazy thing is I love them all and it would cause a war to break out if I had to get rid of any of it! I love your collections. M.Ann

  12. I collect amber glass, mostly depression glass in the amber color, but I do have some new things that I have seen in various stores that have struck my fancy. I've been in love with crystals since I was a child, a magpie for sure. It kills me that I don't have crystal dripped chandeliers all over my house, but alas, maybe in another 10 years I'll have a house where that is appropriate, and all of those beautiful crystal tear drops I've collected from old chandeliers, lamps, etc., can come out to play. (I've been hanging them on the christmas tree's for the past 2 years!) Great post today Gollum! ;)

  16. Good Morning,

I've enjoyed seeing your collections, guess I should take pictures of mine, I always wanted to for insurance purposes, maybe this will give me that push I needed.

Try to take a minute and check out the photos I just posted, on my blog, that were taken by our daughter. I wish I had her talent for taking pictures.

    Thanks for sharing today....

  24. Hi Gollum :)

I so enjoyed catching up with you. I waited until I had time to really enjoy it ;)

Your furry babies are so cute. I love their decorating style ;)

Your ironstone collection is incredible and you are a master of the vignette.

As far as collecting, like Laurie it would be easier to tell you what I don't collect LOL I've inherited collections of everything from silver to crystal animals to china. I guess you could say I collect family heirlooms (LOL). I can't stop buying chairs and pictures and I'm running out of room.

  27. Currently I am collecting regional Southern cookbooks and I enjoy all my kitchen "gadgets". Most of the things I collected when I was younger, I have been trying to find good homes for. Kind of like you try to find a new home for a much loved pet. I don't want the things that I have loved so dearly to end up in an estate sale or donated because no one knows the history behind the item. I have tried to pass things on to those I knew would cherish as much as I have over the years.

  28. You don't have to post this, but I finally figured out who you are! I haven't been able to visit much lately - busy with summer & yard chores, etc - but last night I saw the cute post of the pups & the apples & I remembered how I loved those pics when I saw them awhile back! Yep, and there your were, your rooms saved in my favorites!! Why do all this, though? Why can't everyone just email back & forth? I miss reading everyones comments sometimes, but enjoy coming here to read & keep in touch with everyone! annie100

  30. I love your Roseville pottery! Especially the blue set at the top! Oh, I would so collect that if I could afford it!

What I do collect is depression glass in the Mayfair open rose pattern, mostly in blue and a few in pink. I also collect porcelain plates, and blue spongeware pottery. I am not above collecting just plain stuff for its emotional appeal, whether it fits or not. Being around it makes me happy!

I have read everyone's responses and there are some beautiful collections out there, for sure. I especially like niartist's idea of collecting crystals from chandeliers, his Christmas tree must absolutely sparkle! I don't really collect all that much I guess.....
I love to collect Seashells, Seashell chandeliers, photo frames, and mirrors, art., etc.. Vintage Christmas anything (in pink, white, silver, aqua blue and/or red). Meissen cherubs, vintage mermaids, 40's beach prints/beauty contest prints, Vargas girl prints, vintage Florida, Texas & California map tablecloths & coolers, Dualit toasters, retro appliances in general, old mismatched china, milkglass vases, mercury glass vases, jadeite anything, miniature framed portraits & landscapes/seascapes, vintage clocks & rhinestone alarm clocks, vintgage beach souveniers/sand buckets, vintage signs and coca cola crates......hmmm.... I guess you could say I like collecting things, just a tad.

  37. I really like that table in the 5th picture from the top. Could you give us another photo of it and tell a little about it, please?
I collect abandoned bird nests and use them often in my still life painting.

  38. You have some beautiful collections! I hope you find a mate for your lobster claw. I've always loved swarovski crystal figurines.(especially as a child) I used to get them every now and then for a birtday or special occasion. They're just so expensive! However, I came across a dog (which turned out to be retired Pluto) for $5 at an antique mall.(worth about$85) I guess they thought it was plastic! I keep them in my china where they sparkle! I look forward to reading your blog every day!!Kristen

  39. Hi Gollum! Well, obviously I collect flower frogs (per my blog), but I also have a passion for bunnies, items made from tin (my Dad was a sheet metal worker way back when), dishes, shaped cake pans like bundt pans from Nordic, cake stands and garden cloches in various sizes, cookbooks & gardening books, I used to collect pigs in the 80's (which are buried under my crawl space along with all my heavy metal record ALBUMS) and I can't forget about the bird nests and houses. Your glass bunny collection caught my eye. ~ Robyn

  41. I love my Royal Doulton ladies and do have a sufficient collection. I'm extremely fussy as to those I choose since their features and hands must be perfect! (I prefer the older ones as the workmanship and painting is exquisite.)

Also as I have a passion for horses I do have a smaller collection of them but none in china or ceramic. (I prefer them to be Artisan hand-crafted in tin, wood, leather, soap stone etc.)

I do have other collections but the above-named are considered my treasures.
