New Old Adirondacks Plus A DVD Extra Picture of Gollum and Dog

Years ago, I bought two Adirondacks from a catalog, and, when Honey put them together, he sliced open his hand and ended up with stitches. So, those chairs were steeped in all kinds of meaning, and we placed them on the side porch. When we moved to a new house, the buyers ended up with my chairs. It's a long story, but basically, we had to be out of the house on July 1, 2006, and at 4 am, July 1st, we were still moving.

We left a note to the Mean buyers (remind me to tell you about the Mean Buyer and her interior decorator), saying we would return for the chairs. We were too exhausted and punchy to add that we'd also left a painting of our two boys and would collect that, too. The next day, when we drove up, and our chairs were missing. "What chairs?" asked the mean buyer. Meanwhile, Honey found the painting, and a tug-of-war broke out. "But those are my boys!" Honey cried. The Mean Buyer said, "I have two boys!"

We got the painting but lost the chairs. Every now and then I drive by our old house, but I have never seen those beautiful Adirondacks. So, one day I was prowling around my favorite antique store, and I saw an Adirondack in a glass display case.

It was $89.99 with a 10% discount. Not bad--and Honey wouldn't have to put it together. I put down a deposit (they didn't want to break down the display, and I wasn't in a rush). Well, this week they called and said, "Your chair is ready--and oh, by the way, did you want another one?"
Did I ever. They threw in the footstool.
While they aren't the same, we love them. This is one time Honey didn't mind my chair addiction.

Here's a picture of me, Gollum, the chair addict, and also one of the Yorkies.

  2. I'm sorry to hear about the "mean buyers!" I've had some unpleasant experiences too but trying to keep the portrait of your sons takes the cake!

It's so nice to see your pretty face at last!

    Hugs to the puppies, Bridget

  3. Hi Gollum :)

The story of the adirondacks is awful! What horrible people, especially trying to take the portrait.

Why did you do it? The reveal I mean.

    The new chairs are beautiful.

  7. Wow...that's pretty low...making you fight for a painting of your own sons. I agree with Vanna...karma is gonna bite them in the tush one day!

  8. I can't imagine those meanies keeping your chairs and trying to keep the portrait of your children. I'm happy that you got the pic of the boys.... clearly adirondacks can be replaced. Portraits, not so much! As my mother always said... They'll get their's. I'm officially reminding you to tell us the story of the mean buyers and the interior designer. BTW, great photo of you, Gollum, and what a cute face on that furry baby of yours! Carol

  11. Hi Gollum, Nice to finally meet you - you're both adorable! I had a similar experience with a move from my first house. The movers were atrocious! Items were stolen, broken, parts were missing. Thousands of dollars of items. It took many years to resolve that one and not to our satisfaction. It sickens me to this day to relive it. My husband was an avid baseball card collector and we HAD a wonderful stereo and a massive CD and album collection - my brand new furniture was soiled. UGH! My advice to anyone moving -read the fine print! There are no laws protecting the consumer - None. In any state. Well, onto better days. I've always loved adirondack chairs. My cousin has 4 in her yard surrounding a flagstone firepit and it is so cozy. ~ Robyn

  12. Hi again - part 2, I actually thought that you were going to tell us that the adirondack chairs you purchased from the antique store were your original chairs. Wouldn't that have been a hoot! "Night ~ Robyn

  13. What goes around comes around as they say and I hope those meanies get theirs, that's awful that you had to tug-of-war you own family photo.

Your new aro-don-dacks (not a typo I just cannot say that word haha) are beautiful.

I am glad you posted the beautiful photo of yourself and your yorkie it must have been quite hard for you to remain anonymous for so long, I am also glad that we can see more of you and your beautiful home as you so deserve all of the recognition and thanks for all you have done for RMS and it's people.

Now do we still call you Gollum or would you prefer your real name?.

  14. Beautiful picture. I don't know why they would want a picture of someone else children. I have noticed people are not going to blogs today. They say it is sightmaster , but I see you still have your counter on this blog. Kathy

  17. Hi Gollum!!
Just had to say my piece regarding your reveal! You are a pretty lady and I am tickled pink (well mentally at least) to see you!

  18. I don't understand why someone would want a picture of children they don't even know, how mean! You are certainly no "Gollum" by any means, it is very nice to have a face to the name! Your puppy is adorable!

    Laura :)

  19. Gollum, you are eaqually beautiful on the outside as you are on the inside.

Those buyers were not very nice people! I can not imagine what they they would possibly do with a portrait of YOUR children. Thank God you got it back!

    The chairs look marevelous!

  20. Well girl, all I can say is that it's time you've come out of hiding. And look at that gorgeous face you were hiding too! And that puppy! Oh, too sweet!

Those chairs truly are beautiful. I'm so glad you got them! But those meanie buyers... what were they thinking? Musta been out of their heads.

    Justine :o )

  21. Last night when I saw your comment in the previous days blog I was stunned to see an actual picture of yourself. It's a pleasure to see the gorgeous person behind all the gifted words.

I always wondered why Mom/Linda referred to you a gollum girl because for the longest time I thought you were a 25 year old guy. I'm unsure when I finally realized Mom/Linda was right. lol

Whatever your reasons to reveal yourself I'm glad you did. Of course I still don't know which RMS nic you use. Sometimes I'm just too slow to connect the dots.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh, I forgot about the "mean" buyers. I'm very happy that you did get the painting back. Maybe it's just as well you didn't get the chairs back because they hold "bad" memories. At least with these new chairs there wasn't any drama included. Just a sweet find.

  23. WOW!!! I so love this picture of you better than the scary face stamp one you did have.. and I so remember Yorkie Manor with the white iron stone and these puppies you had 2 of them right?? Your chairs are just great!! I am so sorry about the mean buyers WHO in there right mind would want a Picture of somelse sons?? You are beautiful Gollum.. Even those we knew for weeks who you were we still had fun trying to figure out who you really were.. Now what are you ever going to do with your other Blgo?? Hugs and smiles

Funny thing about your chairs,my husband and I went on Vacation last year,he fell in love with these 2 Adirondack chairs the inn had, keeps pestering me to buy them for our back yard. But our house is so modern, stucco south Florida. I guess I may have to give in...
    Finally your face!!

I'm curious like Rue...why the reveal?

    ReplyDelete
  28. This may be revealing too much, (so I'll understand if you don't post), but you're RMS name certainly doesn't "fit" you!! :-))
If you ever need a "dog sitter"...I'll come running! I'd feel like a "pretend queen" walking through your house! Ha!

  29. Those chairs are just the tip of the story. Our house had sold (and it wasn't on the market! It was a former funeral home that we'd renovated). We had less than one month to move. I was going to have a tag sale, and I was actually tagging stuff, when the Mean buyer and her decorator showed up (they showed up everyday, lol, and I could hear MB talking in other rooms saying how much she hated what I'd done, lol lol and how much better it would look...the decorator had more tact). Not until this point did I realize the New Buyer was a Mean Buyer). The MB made a list of things she wanted in my house--most were things I had no intention of selling but planned to give to my children and niece. But I did sell things I COULD part with, and boy, did I ask the moon. MB whipped out her checkbook and paid up. She kept coming back and even wanted stuff that I'd earmarked for Good Will--I just gave it it to her. Our last day in the house, she showed up with a pest control man, painters, floor refinisher (and the floors had JUST been refinished), the designer, and a crew to strip the Ralph Lauren wallpaper in the master bath (for those who remember that old pattern, it was "Southhampton"--the only wallpaper in the house but oh, how sweet it was, with an old stained glass window from England to match, lol). Anyway, the MB stayed and stayed and we were trying to load the U-haul and kept bumping into people. We moved ourselves, but I digress.

Later, months after the move, I walked into an antique mall and saw all my former stuff in a booth. At another mall, I saw more stuff. I never found my cookbooks or the Adirondacks that I'd left. The MB didn't stay in the antique business long. My attitude is, don't get mad, just write about it. So I am putting her in a future book.

Regarding the reveal, I will remain as Gollum, if that's okay. It was just time to step out from behind the curtain. On some of my favorite blogs, the bloggers used their real pictures and stories about their lives. They could share their homes, projects, adventures. Me, I had to edit every darn picture in Photoshop. lol I had to "blur" my black fence in all of the outdoor pics. Plus, I could never show pictures of my dogs!

After posting the spotlight stories on Susan, VickyDarnell, and Sasha--and they opened their hearts and homes to us all--it seemed clear that anonymity is RMS's downfall. We humans are social animals--and we need to form bonds. Anyway, that's the reason I dropped the veil. I wanted to be brave like my friends. Plus, I don't like secrets.

I have a theory, did you ever speak to any of your old neighbors about the missing chairs. One of your neighbors may have taken home a prize before the new owners moved in.

  33. Well..... I haven't been here long so you will have to spell the reveal out for me.
I think it would be hard to have someone in your home rummaging through your things no matter what the situation...I get offended when I have a yard sale..LOL I have a real estate horror story too. I can simplify by saying this. Never, no matter how kind you are or how desperate your buyer is under any circumstances let someone move in to your home until the deal closes! ~Athella

  34. As my head hit my pillow last night, there was a smile of content on my face ... finally I knew who Gollom was! I spent part of this morning touring your home and grounds ... oh, what a magnificant place. You have the face and countenance of a designer and writer. Thank you for the gift of YOU! 36. Hey Gollum, I'm very glad that you have stepped out into the light. I've been wanting to know for months how that last project you were working on turned out? Did you pick a paint color and get the white "thingie" hung? If you did, could you add a photo of it to the original post on RMS? I finally "broke down" and bought one for my daughter. She hung hers inside of an ornate frame...looks really cute.

  37. I understand. Not that it matters, but I do. I was a little shocked yesterday and for whatever reason a little sad. Not because it was you, but because you didn't stay "Gollum". I'm glad you are keeping that name, although it doesn't fit your beauty at all, but neither did the other name. I hope you remain Switzerland.

    hugs to you my friend,

  42. I love adirondack chairs! I think it all started because my grandmother had some at the lake. Oh how I wish I could go back in time and save them and bring them back to today! So sorry to hear that those buyers were such greedy snots! What goes around comes around eventually.

I've finally figured out who you are! Now that I know, I just have to say that your rooms are among the most classy and elegant on RMS, and always a joy to visit!

  43. Hey, Gollum! Thanks for sharing your MB/decorator story. How sad for them that they had to behave so ugly. They certainly couldn't have improved on what you had done in the former funeral home. Based on what your home looks like, I would love to have seen the magic you worked there. In the meantime, we'll all be happy to see more rooms on the "farm". I would just about donate a body part to see the bedroom on the sidebar of the blog. (you know the one with the amazing headboards and the awesome drapery). Hint, hint!!!!! I'm REALLY looking forward to the book about the MB and the decorator. Carol

I'm shaking my head in disbelief at the audacity of the "MB." It takes all kinds, doesn't it?

Well, I have to say I can not, for the life of me, figure out how you came up with your RMS name! Judging from this beautiful photo, the first word does NOT fit you at all! And you certainly don't look the age you claim to be!

    ReplyDelete
  45. A face with a name, it means so much more.

  46. Awwwwww there you are!! You hadn't posted your picture when I posted last night! I must have caught you mid-post *winks* Gollum girl you are an exotic beauty!! Not what I expected at all given the RMS thing *winks*....but when it comes to you, always expect the unexpected! Lol!! Your yorkies are adorable!! I am so thrilled to have a face to go with all the wonderful words! Vanna

    ReplyDelete
  47. Carol, the bedroom in the sidebar no longer exists--it was a guest room in the ex-funeral home. The draperies, headboards, pillows, dustskirts are in a new guest room (minus the poofy duvets--one was lost during the move). This will be my granddaughter's room, Annabel's, and also a guest room. So it's been a challenge. I'm trying to decide if I should paint the ceiling, or the walls; and I have made no progress with the mishmash of furniture that's ended up in there. It's the room that leads to the attic, so, when I'm de-cluttering for guests, guess which door gets shut right off the bat? lol I am reading a book about ordering the home, and I can see that Gollumy intervention of the first order is needed. The first thing I plan to do is BUY BETTER MATTRESSES. lol And down pillows! Comfort goes a long way and, IMHO, trumps decor.

  53. When my 'little gray cells' finally remembered where that fireplace was located, I popped over to RMS to check, and I was correct! Have salivated over your spaces,(yes that's my drool on your carpets, sorry!), but missed your later posts when I took my 'vacation' from RMS in the spring. How nice to discover your "new" rooms and see your lovely face all on the same day. I'm a tiny bit sad that the mystery has ended, but glad that you'll keep doing what you do so well. A rose by any other name is still a rose! Nancy
PS: Can't believe the nerve of the MB regarding your sons' portrait, and that Yorkie is a little sweetie!

  54. Well it's really nice to put a face to the name...but I for one am a bit perturbed...I mean COME ON...your decorating talent is beyond exceptional...you have a way with words that is magical...and then you get to be BEAUTIFUL too!!! I CALL NO FAIR! You could have at least had the courtesy to be frumpy. It would have been the kind thing to do. So much to live up to ... so little chance of doing it! Your story reminded me of our last home sale. I had these beautiful curtains my mother had made for me in our sunroom. The new buyer wanted them and I told her those were the only ones I really wanted to keep...and explained they were special because my mom made them for me. She INSISTED they get to keep them. I gave in reluctantly because we REALLY needed to sale the house...I drove by a month or so later and she had taken them down and replaced them. I wanted to throw a rock through her window! Mean people suck. Take care gollum....It's so nice to "see you".

  55. Dear Gollum, Overheard part of a conversation at a restaurant today--two ladies were talking about someone who lived in a renovated funeral home. I just read today's blog, and Gollum, they were talking about you! If I'd paid attention, I'd have learned about your Big Reveal while eating my chicken pot pie. True to form, you've got a multi-layered story here, and I have the luxury late in the day of reading the wonderful comments from RMSers who have said everything and more that I'd think to say. I've been wanting Adirondack chairs ever since I first sat in one as a child in Florida. I realized then that they are just the right size for a man or a little girl. Ignore the fact that I burned the back of my legs every time I sat down! But oh, how infuriating that MB burned Gollum! And good for you not to back down on that painting of your boys....I had suspected that you might be found out, so it's best that you did it yourself. What a radiant spirit shines in the portrait of beautiful you with your Yorkie! To see that picture is to know you! Fieldstone/Pam

  56. Evening, Gollum! What mean ole people. I'll bet you wanted to tear up your contract with them after their trying to keep your sons picture and the chairs!!
Well, how nice it is to meet you - you're just the prettiest thing and look at the adorable little fuzzy face! Now, I know you're all elegant and such, but I have a challenge going on at my blog and I would love for you to participate. It's not painful or anything! If you would, I would truly be honored!
Again, it's so nice to see you in person, you little stinker.

  57. Dear Gollum and friends! Imagine my surprise this evening as it is getting too dark to type on my new laptop out on my Mom's 12th floor balcony, that I get to see your pretty face!! I had a yorkie once myself, and he was a cute lil fella. I have missed my daily browsing as family takes up so much more of my time when I am up here in mosquitoland. Mean Buyers...I have been lucky in that dept, but have a horribly sad story of selling my 4th house to one of my friends. way too sad to go into ,but I could prob write a book on it. Can't see to type anymore but so nice to see your face..hope everyone is enjoying their summer.
