This morning, Dr. Gollum stopped by the big, after Thanksgiving sale at the antique mall--and I am now the proud owner of twelve Spode turkey plates. I tried to upload more pictures, but Young Gollum is bellowing about bandwith or somesuch. I'm off to see a movie with friends, so maybe when I return, Young Gollum will be asleep.
Oh, I love the plates! Any tablescaping ideas? Maybe you all can give me some tips and exercises to break "tablescape block," which, I suspect, is a kissin' cousin to writer's block, only with china.
Hugs,
Gollum
Girl right now I'm so green with envy I can't think straight.. Oh how I'm been drooling over those plates..oh woe is me..it's just not meant to be.. I can see some mercury glass used, some Christmas greenery.. oh gosh girl.. I've got to go back and look some more.. I'll try not to get anything on these beautiful plates..hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteLove those plates! I bet you'll get lots of ideas from all these creative bloggers!
Hope you enjoyed the movie...I went to one today and will post about it tomorrow!
Hold on to those plates with both hands now that Spode is going out of business. They are lovely.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated Thanksgiving. It looks like you had a great one!

How wonderful of Mr.Gollum to get these for you! They are beautiful and Lynnes idea of mercury glass is great!

Gollum,
ReplyDeleteI finally posted my exercise. My IC was beating me down all day. Im not thrilled with my story but I refused to let my IC stop me from posting. Im trying not to be worried about perfection. I figured the more I write the better I will get. (All in due time.)
I love your new plates! Are those matts mirrored?

Oooooh how beautiful!! I'm crying "woe is me" along with Lynne! :-) How nice and just plain THOUGHTFUL of Dr. Gollum to bring these beauties back!! Okay, I'm seeing navy blue..."something". Napkins, cobolt blue glasses...something of that nature. Oh my~~I have to go back and look again...such prettiness! (I think I just made up a word! :-))
ReplyDeleteBTW, what is "bandwith"??
Hope the movie was good!! :-)
Laura
Yeah, I'm dripping with jealousy, too. While you were leisurely enjoying yourself at the movies I had to traipse through Wal-Mart again, only this time with my cousins. Nothing worse than looking at the same merchandise two days in a row....but lunch was involved so it was worth it, I guess. We finally strolled through Maplewood Mall and I accomplished crossing a few things off my list for Jacob. I think that you are off to a great start with your "tablescape". ~ Robyn
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I also forgot to tell you that I think your Holiday look is really cute! ~ Robyn
ReplyDeleteBeautiful setting!... and what a GREAT gift!
ReplyDeleteLove the mercury glass idea! How do you feel about blue and the lime green we are seeing a lot of? Silver, mercury glass, blue and lime green to shake things up a bit. Don't forget the fake snow that you mix from a package, which looks quite like the real thing.
:-) - SherylCanadianGirl
I'm laughing because there is bellowing about bandwidth at our house sometimes too.
ReplyDeleteYour plates are beautiful. Dr. Gollum is awfully sweet!
This looks wonderful the plates are beatiful;) Let it be known that I truly don't know a thing about table scapes but an idea or two I havfor have...white tulips with painted sprigs of silver? some crytal confetti spread across the table? While at TJ Maxx yesterday I found some crystal paperweights there were beautiful and I saw on the HGTV Christmas show where they used those in a tablescape I should have bought some myself~~~best of luck no matter what you do it will look beautiful as this table already does;) French
ReplyDeleteDr. G is one sweet man to come home with those lovely dishes. Since I'm a sparkley admirer, the gold placemats give the dishes that extra punch which I adore. Even dishes need to wear "jewelry".
ReplyDeleteOh Gollum...Such beautiful plates! And 12 of them! How wonderful!!! You can invite a whole gang over! Don't ask me about tablescapes, though. As my daughter says, we don't eat off our plates...we hang them on the wall! lol Have a great day...Debbie
ReplyDeleteHow sweet of your doctor man to bring such wonderful gifts..I can see something sparkly on the table to compliment the pattern. I do hope you went to see "Australia" .. it was more than worth the two hour length. Nicole and Hugh were perfect as the lead characters and the Outback landscape was better than any National Geographic spread.
ReplyDeleteYou'd better give Dr. Gollum a big, juicy kiss for that score. Tell him they're an investment! That ALWAYS makes men feel better about spending $ !!! I think that much like the perfect room, a tablescape needs to evolve. You have the perfect bones already existing. Now comes the fun part. I seen a bed of fresh greens running down the middle of the table with some glitzy silver garland entertwined and a few ornaments in a matte finish of apple green tucked in. I would also add an ornament of the same apple green tied to the stem of each goblet (with silver wired ribbon). I like Lynne's idea of mercury glass too. Some larger ornaments of Mercury would be pretty tucked into the greenery.
ReplyDeleteHope your movie was great! What did you see? And, what the heck is bandwith?
Carol
I don't know if I am more jealous of the plates or that your honey surprized you with them.. I would not dare advice on tablescapes...susan is the queen there. vickydarnell
ReplyDeleteSir Gollum is a sweetie!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, tablescape. Lovely china and I adore those charger plates. Happy Holidays,
ReplyDeleteBlossom
I echo Vicky's comments! You need to ask Susan some advice on the finishing touches, although it looks great right now. And what a smart hubby..you've heard the line, "when the Mrs. is happy, everyone's happy"! Such a wonderful thing for him to do! I have spent the entire holiday weekend inside bemoaning this horrible cold MY dear hubby passed on to me. "MRS." is not very happy here! Congrats on the lovely Spode. Jan
ReplyDeleteP.S. Since I am the Queen and Mistress of my computer, I honestly don't know what 'bandwith' means! Tell me please? Jan
ReplyDeleteYou're so funny! Fantastic score for Dr Gollum! They're beautiful! ♥ Diane
ReplyDeletePlease tell me I didn't let that typo get past me. I clearly didn't "Seen" a bed of greens. I merely "Saw" it! Oh, my dear mother is rolling in her grave. Sorry Mom! That's what I get for not proof-reading!
ReplyDeleteCarol
Gollum... What beautiful dishes... I really love them... I am not a critic of tablescape and have no expertise with them what so ever but I think sometimes less is more... Your table looks so elegant to me... Your one lucky little lady that the DR. went and picked them up for you... he is a gem... Have a great Sunday
ReplyDelete(((HUGS)))
Donna
LOL...tablescape block...too cute. For me...when I feel blocked...I go out and buy a different color of paper plate...WOOT fancy!!! The plates are beautiful...what a lovely thing for him to do!
ReplyDeleteCan I borrow Dr Gollum?, Gollum, Spode Woodland is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI think you already have the perfect accessories for those beautiful plates right there, your wonderful family, enjoy,
Kathy
tablescaping to me is like trying to learn a new and very difficult language...sorry...no help here!
ReplyDeletehave a great time at the movie...
I think Mr. Gollum desreves something REALLY special for Christmas this year, he was VERY good getting you these dishes!
ReplyDeleteBuffie :)
Oh how gorgeous! Was that a surprise, or were you with him? LOVE those mirrored "place mats". Wow, talk about elegant!
ReplyDeleteJustine :o )
Gollum,
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid you've opened 'a can of worms' by asking for our input for the dishes. Just by reading what we've written in our stories, you can see that we all have such different ideas. Your best bet is to JUST ASK SUSAN. Now there's a title for a new HGTV show.
'D'
No, he was alone. But I'd gone the day before and told him that I couldn't believe that I hadn't snapped up those plates.
ReplyDeleteWe went to see A Quantum of Solace, and it was great! But poor Dr. Gollum left his coat in the theatre (and when we went back today--it was gone). It was a farm coat, but still. He liked it a lot.
Tootsie, I'm with you about tablescapes. I do NOT speak that language. What a great analogy, by the way.
I was actually planning on using a ham as the centerpiece. I love the idea of using acid green as an accent. And I do have a red and acid green wreath in the basement. But it's huge. It would swallow a ham. :-) I won it in a raffle a few years ago.
However, when I went downstairs to dig out the Christmas tree and ornaments, I wrenched my back. Major ouchy. Decorating is dangerous, I kid you not!
I forgot to say....
ReplyDeleteIt makes my head hurt to think about bandwith. I just know that when I'm trying to upload photos to the blog, it knocks Young Gollum off line.
Gollum,
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading my story. I was hoping that the dialect was not too difficult to follow. I am glad you enjoyed it. I am really enjoying these exercises.
Other than Kathy, is anyone else participating? I would love to read their stories.

Hi Michael, I love your Dr. Gollum...any man who buys dishes is top notch in my book! :-) So many great suggestions posted here! You could use the wreath you mentioned and place the ham on an elevated surface in the center. I usually do just what you have done...set the table and then next I go shopping in the house. Take a plate with you as you walk through the house. Shut down your Tablescaping IC and be open to any of the wonderful decorative pieces you have through out your home. I'd definitely check in your gorgeous blue guest room. I see some love blue pottery in your side bar. If you have any glass or crystal votives, you could place lots of those all over the table. Their easy to find inexpensively at Big Lots or Walmart and they give tables a magical feel. You might want to walk around through your yard tomorrow and just see what's growing that you could put in a cache pot or use as a centerpiece. Wouldn't Mahonia with those gorgeous blue berries be beautiful...although I doubt it still has berries this time of year. Wonder how your large white rooster would look on the table? Don't you also have a wonderful collection of cream ware that Mister tried to help you arrange on some shelves? Do you have several cloches that you might place randomly on the table? Even shop the basement...open up the cupboards...and see what's hiding in there. As you start to try different things, you will know what's working right away. Can't wait to see what you come up with. :-) Susan
ReplyDeleteOh, forgot to ask...does this mean I can put you down for Tablescape Tuesday? :-)
ReplyDeleteGollum,
ReplyDeleteThank you for that bit of info. I will be sure to order that book. I sure hope Barnes and Nobles has it.

You are so lucky!!! I want a man like that!!! I think your tablescape looks amazing already!
ReplyDeleteSusan, bless your heart! I didn't even think about taking the plate with me! And I had completely blocked out the ironstone. Oh, yes!!! This will look better than ham. But I can put the ham on the side table. I will check Big Lots for votives.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas!!!!!
Evening, Dear Gollum. Oh, the plates are gorgeous! I won't covet them, no I promise I won't. I just love anything Spode and these are too beautiful! I think you've done an excellent job all by your little smartie self in tablescaping!!
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia :)
