One wall in our family room has three wicked corners. They are very, very wicked. And I was flummoxed.
First, I tried a cloverleaf table, art, and a lamp.

Next, I moved the chinoiserie secretary into this room; I added a floor lamp, hung a picture, and propped a mirror over the chest. I liked what the mirror reflected...but something was wrong. So I emailed pictures to my friend, Allison.

Allison took one look and suggested I remove the mirror and add art. However, I went hog wild. But I always go hog wild.
It looked so much better with the edits.
After a long while, I added two paintings: a fox and a chicken (based on a real adventure that happened on the farm--I like art--and rooms--to tell a story...and this art just happened to be in a dusty, old store at the right time). For Thanksgiving, I added two porcelain birds (this room has a major animal theme with lots of wire birdcages).

Corners can be a wicked challenge. But I learned to use the wickedness to my advantage--I learned to play up the corner, to create a mini-vignette that could stand alone and still work with other elements in the room. I have a friend who put a black chest in a corner (it was a corner chest), and then she hung bird prints on either side of the corner, with a tall, thin lamp in between: it was gorgeous.
Couldn't have done this in a million years without you, Allison. :-) Decorating is always better--and a thousand times more fun--with friends.
Hugs,
Gollum

ReplyDeleteHello Gollum, together you and Allison created a perfectly inviting corner, your chest, paintings and accessories are just right.
ReplyDeleteI have an award for your fabulous blog Gollum, come by and collect it when you get a moment, hugs, Kathy.
It looks wonderful!. My hubby has that book you were talking about. I just have never read it. He writes 3 pages every day. I don't know if I could do three pages ever day. I like to keep my stories short that way a reader dosen't get bored. It is more fun to see if I can make more power in less words. Kathy
ReplyDeleteThat's just perfect Gollum. You and Allison make a good team.
ReplyDeleteI have a wicked corner that I've been staring at for 8 years now. Haven't even tried to make it better. You've inspired me. :)
Good Morning Gollum,
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to know that I'm not the only one that likes to move things around. Your corner looks so warm and inviting.
Well, my Christmas cards are ready to be mailed and my letter included for those I send one to every year. My kids/grandkids all made it to the bus at 6am this morning for their trip to N.Y. and the Christmas Show at Radio City Music Hall, our gift to them this year.
So now my IC will let me get back to writing. :) I just can't decide if I want to continue with my story or start a new one. The last list of words you gave us has my mind going in a different direction.
Have a great day.....

Morning, Dear Gollum! Oh, I love this corner and wish I had one, too! You have such beautiful things to decorate with and you've made this little corner outstanding. Maybe I could borrow your friend, Allison sometimes. ;) But I must say, Dearest Gollum, I cannot imagine you being in a dilemma with anything - you're so perfect in every way!! ;)
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
A+ for you and Allison! Corners are my nemesis! I'm going to start treating them as you suggested we treat our IC. I think if I have a general "recipe" for a corner, I can always change it to suit the personality of the client... much like I would add basil or garlic (or chocolate) to something going into the oven. And--- it wouldn't hurt to have an Allison in my back pocket.

I play a little game when I make a change in a room. I walk into another room briefly, then walk back into the room I made changes in as if I'm seeing the room for the first time. It's as if a fresh set of eyes are looking at the changes.
ReplyDeleteA corner chest! I've never had one and I have a corner begging to be filled. Antique stores, second hand stores and thrift stores are all open today. Yipee. Yours looks great.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Gollum, You and Allison made a great team putting together a beautiful vignette..

Gollum,
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by the blog! I always love hearing from you. I noticed from the Veranda photos that a lot of the furniture was used from her store in Austin. I'm certain that many of the shots were staged with the amazing pieces she had at her disposal from the boutique, and in the process, it was more than likely edited to the enth degree. If you take a look at some of the more English stylings of the dining room and bedroom in the photo set from the 30th, you'll see that she has a lot of excess, and most probably, the furniture of that series belonged to her. Either way - she has impeccable taste, and I'd absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE to see your two dear painted and draped in fresh greens this season! I know you're not big on playing with the contests, but I hope you'll share some of your Christmas photos with me for the blog. I know they'll be great. :)
Oooo, yes, I forgot to mention that corner! What a great idea, to hang art on either side. I have a few crooked corners in my house that have baffled me as well. This is the perfect solution, I just need to find more art! YAY! A reason to shop ... :)
ReplyDeleteHad to swing back in and take another gander at this beautiful corner. There's something so relaxing about it. I also wanted to thank you for swinging by..You are just the best..
ReplyDeletehugs ~lynne~
You would so laugh at my friend and I. We decorate long distance with cell phone and pictures on the computer....it is hilarious. But you are right, it is better with another eye.
ReplyDeleteYour corner turned out beautiful, as usual!
It's perfect! You succeded in turning wicked into wonderful!
ReplyDeleteBuffie :)
What a great way to start the week! You are so welcome. I remember working on that corner like it was yesterday. Such fun. Love the birds.
ReplyDeleteSuper Bowl Sunday is right around the corner. What will we be working on this year? lol
Allison
Doesn't it feel good to get those little vignettes just right!
ReplyDeleteHi Gollum...I love the way it turned out! Isn't it funny how something inside just says "This isn't working" and when it's right, you just know. Is it that decorating IC?? lol I also meant to say how much I love the first selection of your music. I don't want to forget all of the families who are sacrificing their Christmas together for us. Thanks for the reminder...Debbie

ReplyDeleteYou could make a heap of mud and a bale of hay work with a flair only YOU have...seriously! Looks great! Just an FYI I had my 10 year old son write the third story thought you should check it out when you get a chance (I am biased of course but was so proud of him) grinning ear to ear;) French
ReplyDeleteOh! How lucky for me! I just discovered your blog and it is fabulous. Looks like I need lots of time to browse older post. I have a feeling you are a wealth of decorating info. Come visit me when you have a moment.

I had to comment on the new music! L-O-V-E IT! The song I'll Be Home for Christmas always leaves a big 'ole lump in my throat. This version with the clips from our troops made the lump bigger than usual. Thanks for sharing it G. God bless our soldiers!
ReplyDeleteYou and Allison make a pretty good team! That corner turned out beautifully! I have a Weird diagonal little corner upstairs in my bedroom. No matter how I move things around its ackward. ~ Robyn
ReplyDeleteI love to have help from a friend when decorating.
ReplyDeleteYour little corner looks fabulous!!
Thanks to YOU...when you posted about doing the story from the eye of a child about 10 I thought hey I have one of those right here...I let him pick which picture and which words is was great and something he needs to boost his confidence;) He still sometimes talks to fast and stutters and we have to gently remind him to slow his speech but otherwise he is doing just fine;) Thanks for the idea it was wonderful to see him so intent on writing this and having all the blog ladies critique it! He will be tickled by the time he gets home tommorrow and sees all the wonderful comments! Again thanks! French;)
