Decorating Trends for 2009: What's In & Out?

I always dread these lists, because without fail, they make me feel like the girl in the back of the classroom who eats her hair. So I decided to make up my own list of "ins/outs."

Decorating Trends for 2009: What's In & Out?

  • Feathers -- Real birds have feathers. And birds don't go out of style. Therefore, feathers are timeless.

  • Colors -- trendy colors for 2009 are the colors that are in your house, and these colors will remain trendy and stylish until you decide to start a new trend.

  • More is More -- While minimalism is always lovely, 2009 is the year of "more is more." Start a collection or three--salt and pepper shakers, little jugs (see above photo), or dishes. Which brings me to the next "rule."

  • 2009 is the year of the Dish. Throw a "Dish Party," and invite your friends to bring a plate, or cup and saucer that they no longer want. Then rework the rules of the game "Bad Santa" and swap up the plates!

  • Silk flowers are chic, and so are plastic ones (see below)

  • In 2009, it will be trendy to arrange your accessories in EVEN numbers. So, the old 3, 5, 7, 9 rule has been trendified to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...all the way up to the 100s (see "More is More")

Happy New Year,

Gollum

Hi G, I totally agree I have never decorated with the trends, in fact I try to do just the opposite.I have lived long enough to see that what is out will eventually be in again. The design world is always ahead of us about 4 yrs anyway. So even if we think we are in we are out.It is enough to make your head spin. When I work with my clients I really try to figure out what they truly love and then they will always feel in.The only thing I might have to disagree on at any level is "plastic flowers",Sorry! Hugs Kathysue

I love your rules! I have to admit though.... I've been breaking rules since at least kindergarten. In college I was finally made a "resident assistant" so I would have to ENFORCE the rules instead of BREAK them. I think I was close to being kicked out!!!!! So, of course, I say make up your own rules, follow them until you tire of them and then re-write them. Just returned from Barnes and Noble in hopes of finding Consuming Passions. It was off the shelf. Next stop on the internet-----Amazon.com!
Enjoy your day and break the rules.
hugs to you! C

LOL
I felt that way about plastic flowers until I found plastic orchids at a close-out sale. They are in the last picture. I don't know how they were made (and they were marked down to $10 each, so I bought a bunch--I gave some away, hoarded the rest). They are a blend of silk and plastic. Everyone thinks they're real. Maybe because the floral part resembles the waxy leaves of a real orchid?

Thank you for the get well wishes. I know they're helping. I'm feeling "some better," as we say Down Here. But still breathless -- in between bites of chocolate cake.

Chocolate cake helps Gollum, really it does, so munch away. I like all of your trends for 2009, the silk orchids are lovely and I am already on the dish party thing, I even have Vanni on board, I must have mentioned a hundred times what gorgeous dishes "Gollum has" it worked coz he surprised me with a wonderful set on Christmas day so I am now offically a Dish collecting Addict YAY. Happy you are feeling a bit better my friend, hugs Kathy.

Love your "no rules" / new rules for decorating in 2009! I just came from the Van Gogh bathroom posted on RMS a few minutes ago by redartwine. Now there's a decorator who knows how to make her own rules! Fieldstone/Pam

What a cute post and A HEALTHY, HAPPY and PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO YOU, DR. GOLLUM and MISTER!

I hope you are feeling better today and your meds have worked to rid of your chemical pneumonitis.

Also wish to let you know, the Snowflake Box arrived safely on Wednesday. It is so very pretty and to think I didn't even have to answer a skill testing question to win it...smiles. Again, thank you so much. Hugs -Brenda-

Well, I don't care what any of the other decorators/designers say about 2009! I'm going with Gollum. I've seen her home, and I know what she does is the best! (Love those trends). The plate party idea sounds like fun. Of course, I'd probably have to go buy some plate I didn't like, because I sure can't give away one I like! Hope you will be breathing much better very soon. BTW, did Dr. Gollum prescribe chocolate cake? Now that's my kind of dr. laurie

Hi Gollum! It sounds like you are feeling better! The only thing about steroids is they make me eat like a teenage boy...up at 3 AM to see what's in the fridge!! But they sure do work! I love your list of trends. I just don't know what plate I'd be willing to swap. I always seem to be behind no matter what, so I might as well just wait until it comes back in style...because it always does! Hope you had a good New Years Day. Enjoy your weekend...Debbie

BRAVO dear Gollum...Someone else who likes to fly in the face of rules! As far as "dishes go", I came across a set of 4 bowls with a farm on them and they say Johnson BROS Ironstone made in England. 'Willow by the Brook'. I snatched them up for 3.00 at a thrift store in Minnesota. Unfortunately by the time I got back with them, I discovered two chipped edges. Anyone need these two good out of 4 bowls??

P.S. we could all say a prayer for Gloria's little Kyra..my thoughts are with her.

Dear Ms. Gollum, please take care of yourself. I have asthma and the cleaning products to a number on me so dear hubby does the really nasty cleaning when I'm out for the evening (he is a dear, I think I'll keep him!).

I will have to tell you that between you and Susan (BNOTP) I have given in to my long love of dishes and have added several new sets this last couple of months.

Hope you feel better very soon, take good care of yourself.

That was great! Finally a list I can live by! Especially the "more is more" part. I was never able to follow minimalist rules.

Evening, Dear Gollum! Oh, I love your list and I'm going to abide by it totally! I hope you're feeling better now and can breath very deeply! Thank you so much for your concerns and prayers for my little Mother. We're going to get through this for sure!
Happy New Year and be a sweetie,

Gollum, I have some awesome faux..orchids, too!! But, I didn't get a bargain on mine. I love them!! I really like your rules. I remember when everyone on RMS told to to add color to my walls. I am so.. glad I didn't listen. I have always loved.. my neutrals!!! I also love feathers. I do live in pheasant country. People come from all over the country to pheasant hunt here. "I buy what I love." I normally stay with tradition stuff. I might throw in a few comtempory accessories. Home is where you surround yourself with the things you love. I love the idea of a plate exchange. But, I wouldn't have anything to exchange. I would have to go buy something. As far as "more is more". I do love my things!!!
Thanks for posting this!!
Hugs, Terrie

Good Evening Gollum,

Something came to my mind as I read today's post, I hope I get it right it's been a long time since I last read it......

I DO MY THING AND YOU DO YOURS,
I AM NOT IN THIS WORLD TO LIVE UP TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND YOU ARE NOT IN THIS WORLD TO LIVE UP TO MINE, BUT IF BY CHANCE WE MEET IT'S WONDERFUL.

I believe we should all decorate our homes with what makes us feel good/comfortable about living there, not by what others suggest that we should do. Your 'right on' today in my opinion. Thanks for suggesting that we should DO OUR OWN THING.

HUGS
'D'

What fun, my hubby will not agree on the more is more! He says I have too much, that includes, you do not need all that peppermint and gingerbread. But Hubby it makes me happy! lol I love the dish party! At Christmas, we did have a group that exchanged something old, not wanted anymore. Now my daughter collects the green sandwiches dishes, I got years ago at this event.
