Still Life With Cupcakes

Time in the kitchen is time to be savored.

Few things are more satisfying than baking winter white cupcakes on a cold morning.

I pulled out my 20-year old Kitchen Aid...

...and began to play. First, the dainty liners

...it's always fun to dance a little while pouring the batter.

I chose a simple white cake recipe, spiffed up with pearl dragees, Royal icing, and filigreed paper wrappers.

I love the textures--the hard edges of paper with the slick, round dragees

the soft, curvy icing...

Really, baking is so much more than mixing ingredients.

It's life-affirming.

Just one sniff for Mister...

One cupcake for me....

...and one for you.

The cupcake wraps are made by Paper Orchid

The colors and styles are out of this world!
I bought mine here:

  3. Hi Michael,
I ran home for lunch and look what I find, YUM! :-) Glad you are taking a break from writing to bake! :-) I was recently inspired by the cupcakes at Carolina Jewel http://carolinajewels-table.blogspot.com/2009/01/snowflake-fairy-cakes.html
I found the exact same snowflake cutters online and ordered them. Yipee! :-) I was so glad I found them because hers cutters (and recipe) came from a friend who lives in France...and the cutters were found in England. You will probably love them, too. Two nights ago I bought the fondant at Michaels and some fairy dust. I've never used fondant so wish me luck! :-) I'm in cupcake heaven looking at yours! :-) Susan

Btw... that cupcake pan was never used before, was it?

  59. I don't usually manage breakfasts these days; a glass of milk does in a hurry. Today, however, there was time to sit and rest my feet, read Pickwick papers, have a proper breakfast. Not more than an hour ago, that was. But all these pics of gorgeous cupcakes? I am hungry again! Not fair that I should only be allowed to feast my eyes and not my tastebuds. Sniff, sniff. Let me see what else you have in your blog, to make up for such injustice...

If you have a moment of spare time (or need a writing break), could you reach out to me through e-mail? I would like to ask you a couple of questions related to writing on behalf of my 26 year old daughter. She has started a book and wants to learn how to get professional feedback on it. If you have thoughts, I can be contacted at t.weakley@sbcglobal.net.

  74. Gollum, since you and Mr. Gollum were insturmental in helping my dear hubby when he was ill; and I do appreciate all the suggestions.
I have been down on the couch or bed for 10 days with a painful back. At first I did apply heat and then ice. Several days went by and I went to the doctor; hip pain and going down my legs. I had an MRI done and the doctor scheduled a eperidual to be done this next Monday. I am scared to death. I know what the risk are very miminual but I always think that I am that 1%. I am taking pain medicine hydrocodone and I only take what I need when it gets so bad I can't stand it. Do you know anyone that has had this done. I will be asleep for this and an exray will show where they are going to inject the steroids.
    thanks,
    Anita
