Simple Cooking: Gone to the Birds

I'm lonesome for spring, so today I began playing with a bird theme for Susan's Tablescape Thursday at Between Naps on the Porch. I remembered seeing darling heart-shaped biscuits for Valentine's Day at Jain's blog, Once In A Blue Moon, and I was inspired to make "bird biscuits," using canned biscuits.

"A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song."
-- Chinese Proverb

"The bluebird carries the sky on his back."
--Henry David Thoreau

"It is not only fine feathers that make fine birds."
Aesop

"Simple Bird Biscuits"

  • canned biscuits (I used Pillsbury Grands)
  • bird-shaped cookie cutter
  • 1/4 stick melted butter
  • pastry brush
  • chopped parsley
  • chocolate dot (for the eyes)

Procedure: Dust a little flour onto a sheet of waxed paper. Use a rolling pin to gently flatten biscuits (roughly the size of your cookie cutter). Bake 350 degrees for 10 minutes or when browned.

Remove from oven. Brush biscuits with melted butter. Press chocolate eye into the appropriate spot. Garnish with parsley.

And that's it!

“I would rather learn from one bird how to sing than to teach 10,000 stars how not to dance.”
--E. E. Cummings

Aftermath:

"A messy kitchen is a happy kitchen, and this kitchen is delirious."
--Unknown

  8. Good Morning Dear Gollum,

I am so tired of this cold, winter weather. :( I'm trying to think spring, but Mother Nature just won't co-operate. I've been busy cooking and baking goodies for our son, who has been visiting this week, to take back home with him. I love having him here,(he's the one with my Mother's eyes):) so at least that makes my heart feel warm. ;)

Love your little birds, I just won some on eBay, that I had, but were broken over the years. I'm so happy to be able to replace them. Have a great weekend.

    Hugs

  20. The biscuits were inspired by Jain's Valentine heart biscuits.

My granddaughter will be here in May, and I hope to bake lots of cookies (maybe without icing,, though, lol) and biscuits with barnyard shapes.

Does anyone else have trouble with cookies and biscuits "melting" and morphing when they're cooking? I wonder if I should chill them beforehand?? Does anyone have suggestions?

  39. Michael, regarding your question about cookies and biscuits. As most recipes will tell you to refrigerate, it could be just the bakings sheets you are using. Have you tried the air-insulated ones? (Two sheets of aluminum with a layer of air between them. Only thing is you cannot submerge them in water.) Hope this helps.

(Am going to pass this idea of 'The Peepers' along to my daughter. They are so cute!)

  40. I just love the birds! What a great idea! I might borrow it for my granddaughter's 3 year old Birthday tea party! When my girls were small, we would pinch off a piece of a canned bisquit and deep fry and sprinkle powdered sugar on them. I wonder if this would work with the birds! Thanks for all your kind words on my blog, and I am so behind blogging with my grandchildren here every day for weeks. I am so glad the baby got to go back with the Mama goat, we had a time getting our little up the first day. He so cute, he stands on my dog's back or lays on her. I got to go see what all the dish things were about at Marshall's and TJ Max! Doc says I can driv 10 min. The stores are 50 min. away, Hubby took me,I had a blast!
Now I want to go back, I met a lady that lives near me, we were both lookig at rooster dishes, she showed hers eggs, and I had a fit! For they are the Arucana chicks I want, I got a name to where to buy them and silkies, its 5 miles from me. lol Ok I had four women ganged up on me, that down loaded my blog and was showing everyone! I even found out about another store that carries the same line, that closer to me, and on the way to Doc! yeah I can't wait! I want to drive away so bad!lol I had a bad fall, Big impact, to forehead, leg, arms you name it I am black and blue. Better today, and wonderful to get out!
