Welcome to Foodie Friday's "Trainwrecks & bloopers!"
Some of you may remember when this sweet, innocent apricot tart
dripped all over the bottom of my oven, carbonizing into an impenetrable shell. It took many applications of baking soda and lemon juice, and, finally, Bandwith plus Brillo Pads. I was just too weak from lifting cookies rather than weights. Sigh.
Why did this happen? Because Gollum used the WRONG PAN.
Gollum will not do this again. Ever. But still, trainwrecks will happen.
Some trainwrecks happen all by themselves. This morning I took random pictures of the kitchen. I thought I'd show what happens to my kitchen when I'm writing a book. Things get skewed. Contrasts appear. Note the hairbrush next to the apples, so the author can detangle her hair while eating apples.
Trashbags and an empty salad bowl.
Doughnuts and Cascade.
Bandwith's Bobby Flay sauce was actually good, but it trainwrecked the cast iron (cast iron HATES tomato based sauces).
The leftover sauce was frozen, the pan cleaned by Bandy. I found it put away neatly in the pan drawer. Bravo, Bandwith!
I would have posted earlier, but I spoke at a local book club, and we started eating cake and drinking wine, and the next thing I knew, it was ten o'clock! Tomorrow, back to writing!

Your kitchen doesn't look too bad. At least you can see your countertops...I just discovered that I have some in my kitchen. I found them under piles of stuff! Nancy PS: I think I've been traumatized by the tomato sauce in your seasoned cast iron. Can I snatch a doughnut to help me recover?
ReplyDeleteHey Gollum...girl I am glad to see I am not the only one that can leave my kitchen clean and come back to a mess..Oh girl you won't believe this I was cleaning out the stair closet and I found 2 plastic containers with more dishes and girl they been there for at least ten years when we built the stairs...I am sick I tell you..I really need a 12 step program..thanks for hosting yet another fun day for us gals...hugs and smiles Gl♥ria

We have done the tomato based sauce in cast iron too! I love my cast iron, but it has had some challenges. A Girl Scout mom scoured a dutch oven with a Brillo pad after I went to sleep and it rusted on the way home. I tried to tell her no soap, but she just wouldn't listen!!!! :D Jewel

The tart looks like it was delicious even it if did leave a bit of it self in the oven. I so hate it when that happens.:-) The smell especially when it is suppose to smell heavenly....

P.S. Her Mother was a wonderful cook, Mom was to busy chasing boys to pay attention.
Even your trainwrecks are nice to look at, what type of camera are you using? Or am I just not that good at using mine? LOL

ReplyDeleteWhat a real-life post and one I can relate to in a big way! Have you seen those new silicone-coated oven liners yet? I have one on the very bottom of my oven now and it has certainly saved the day more than once already.

We where laughing about it on the phone. My daugher ask if I have every heard from her. I said no and I hope she is writing any cook books. LOL

I am sooo afraid to do the cooking posts. I did one and it was move this.. oh no you can see the loaf of bread, move the coffee out of the shot..too much morning light from the window! But I love to come to your house and others and see perfection, at least most of the time!

ReplyDeleteAbout the oven and the potato, first I got out all the loose potato, and then I turned on the clean cycle. I will tell you that it stunk up the whole house! Not sure if it was the potato or the fact that it was the first time we had run the cleaning cycle, but it was not a good smell! Also, I made a tart with a butter paté crust and somehow the butter that was already mixed in the tart crust, oozed out the bottom of the tart pan and made a mess and a burning smell. Wouldn't you know that I had students from my French class arriving to taste a French apple tart and pee-yoo! Oh, well, these things happen : ) Linda

"practise makes perfect" is what I prefer to call my kitchen disasters, young bandwiths sauce reminds me of the day Vanni used the mixer and we ended up wiping bright red sauce from the ceiling and on top of the kitchen cupboards for weeks after lol. hope you pan survives, it does look delicious and what a gem he is for cleaning up after him (Vanni never does that :-). ReplyDeleteOK! I am jealous! I do remember all the lambs jumping and playing! Oh, those little Y ears you talked about got me! Oh, to just look out the back window and see those lambs again! Hubby keeps saying no, he has enough to take care of! Well, he been working with Mississippi State University growing crawfish in a pond. He has thousand and thousands. I guess we will be building more ponds. I am still going to get my sheep and beloved angora goats! I just want a small flock. It is Spring and I know you are loving it, by watching all the animals on the farm. Yes, I am still jealous! lol

ReplyDeleteOh NO! Best investment I ever made and only $18 was a roll of tephlon oven liner. Woo hoo easy clean up no matter what runneth over! I place it in the bottom of my oven and toaster oven. I will never live without it again!
