Welcome to Foodie Friday's "Trainwrecks & bloopers!"
Some of you may remember when this sweet, innocent apricot tart
dripped all over the bottom of my oven, carbonizing into an impenetrable shell. It took many applications of baking soda and lemon juice, and, finally, Bandwith plus Brillo Pads. I was just too weak from lifting cookies rather than weights. Sigh.
Why did this happen? Because Gollum used the WRONG PAN.
Gollum will not do this again. Ever. But still, trainwrecks will happen.
Some trainwrecks happen all by themselves. This morning I took random pictures of the kitchen. I thought I'd show what happens to my kitchen when I'm writing a book. Things get skewed. Contrasts appear. Note the hairbrush next to the apples, so the author can detangle her hair while eating apples.
Trashbags and an empty salad bowl.
Doughnuts and Cascade.
Bandwith's Bobby Flay sauce was actually good, but it trainwrecked the cast iron (cast iron HATES tomato based sauces).
The leftover sauce was frozen, the pan cleaned by Bandy. I found it put away neatly in the pan drawer. Bravo, Bandwith!
I would have posted earlier, but I spoke at a local book club, and we started eating cake and drinking wine, and the next thing I knew, it was ten o'clock! Tomorrow, back to writing!
If you are participating in Foodie Friday this week, please add your blog entry's permalink (to your Foodie Friday post), along with your name.
Oh, you mean kitchens aren't supposed to look like this? :-)
ReplyDeleteCake and wine...interesting combination...I like it! :-)Susan
Your kitchen doesn't look too bad. At least you can see your countertops...I just discovered that I have some in my kitchen. I found them under piles of stuff! Nancy PS: I think I've been traumatized by the tomato sauce in your seasoned cast iron. Can I snatch a doughnut to help me recover?
ReplyDeleteHey Gollum...girl I am glad to see I am not the only one that can leave my kitchen clean and come back to a mess..Oh girl you won't believe this I was cleaning out the stair closet and I found 2 plastic containers with more dishes and girl they been there for at least ten years when we built the stairs...I am sick I tell you..I really need a 12 step program..thanks for hosting yet another fun day for us gals...hugs and smiles Gl♥ria
ReplyDeleteThe arrangement of your kitchen in these photos looks very familiar!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this event. I'm looking forward to all the stories.
We have done the tomato based sauce in cast iron too! I love my cast iron, but it has had some challenges. A Girl Scout mom scoured a dutch oven with a Brillo pad after I went to sleep and it rusted on the way home. I tried to tell her no soap, but she just wouldn't listen!!!! :D Jewel
ReplyDeleteI am participating this Friday but not with a train wreck post. (there would be too many) Pam
ReplyDeleteHi Gollum! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one whose kitchen becomes a trainwreck when I'm busy!! The BBQ sauce does look good! I think it's wonderful that young Bandy is experimenting in the kitchen! Hope you have a great weekend...hugs...Debbie
ReplyDeleteHi dear one...
ReplyDeleteMy first entry here (#7) did not work right...don't know what I did. Anyway if you would delete it, I just added another. So sorry...
This is such a fun thingy ....
xo bj
Gollum,
ReplyDeleteIt was so nice to see your kitchen can also look like my kitchen when life real life happens... Yours always look spectacular on your blog.
The tart looks like it was delicious even it if did leave a bit of it self in the oven. I so hate it when that happens.:-) The smell especially when it is suppose to smell heavenly....
Thanks for hosting!
It somehow makes me feel a bit better knowing that you have a "normal" home!
ReplyDeleteI'm not officially signed up for Foodie Friday, but my Mother cut up and fried her first Thanksgiving turkey!
P.S. Her Mother was a wonderful cook, Mom was to busy chasing boys to pay attention.
Even your trainwrecks are nice to look at, what type of camera are you using? Or am I just not that good at using mine? LOL
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday to you! Young Bandwidth certainly redeemed himself by doing something that distracted your from the other "skewed" things.
Your kitchen looks like mine on a normal day....Young Bandwith's Bobby Flay sauce looks delish! I'm sure your pan can be saved. I hope. ~ Robyn
ReplyDeleteSorry I didn't keep with the theme I had this one ready to go b/c my house is full of folks! I will next week. This was a fun post!
ReplyDeleteAhhh so Gollum MAY be human after all...as her kitchen does look familiar..... with items on the counter.... I know it doesn't look like that for long!
ReplyDeleteSusan
This was a great idea for foodie friday! I'm having fun reading about everyone's disasters in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI like Bandwidth's new nickname too.
Thanks for sharing your "normal" kitchen with us!! It just makes me feel better. Happy Foodie Friday and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteMy kitchen counters tend to look like this by Friday. Spend the weekend cleaning, repeat lol! The tart does look delicious even if it made a mess. Thanks for hosting, I think this is going to be a fun week! Kathy
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this! What fun!
ReplyDeleteHi Gollum, Joining in today for you Foodie Friday! I could fill a blog full of my mishaps! LOL! And thanks for the tip on your tomato based "trainwreck" in the cast iron. Your kitchen is great, no matter what little mess! ~Rhonda :)
ReplyDeleteGollum,
ReplyDeletehaving seen all of your perfect creations and pictures on your blog in the past I have to say I'm relieved to know that you have some mishaps like the rest of us. It was becoming quite challenging living up to your standards *grin*
Thank you for hosting this fun event my friend.
Have a wonderful Friday,
Tam
What fun to see other Trainwrecks. I guess we all have them. Thanks for hosting this event. I joined in today for the first time, hope I did alright.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and am looking forward to digging into your book that I order this weekend while I babysit my two grandson's.
Your hairbrush would fit right in at my house. For some reason my deodorant was on the counter for two days. Who knows why...
ReplyDeleteSo glad I could post my first Foodie Friday. Still with all the train wrecks you have the most delicious looking food.
ReplyDeleteI am glad I am not the only one who has hair brushes and trash bags on the counter top! ;D
ReplyDeleteMy sweet little French Great-Grandmother once told me... "One cannot become a great cook unless one makes a few mistakes along the way..." As she removed a lopsided cake from her woodburning stove... I've always known she was right... ;) blessings on the first day of Spring! Dixie
ReplyDeleteAs always, a clever post. Even a trainwreck looks interesting. Thanks for hosting another potluck.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first visit to your exceptional blog! However, I am sorry I can't join in this Foodie Friday because my kitchen is always spit spot, and my recipes turn out to perfection . I also enjoy writing fiction!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear your kitchen looks like a trainwreck at times! I think when a person is writing a book, they are excused though!
ReplyDeleteWhat a real-life post and one I can relate to in a big way! Have you seen those new silicone-coated oven liners yet? I have one on the very bottom of my oven now and it has certainly saved the day more than once already.
ReplyDeleteThat tart looks like it worth the mess it made, though ;)
Pictures of real life! My kitchen and dining area both are pretty messey right now.
ReplyDeleteGlenda
What a really sweet post.
ReplyDeleteHave A Fantastic Friday
from A Raggedy Roberta Anne
I can still see your countertops so it isn't all bad. By the way, we have the same countertop in our kitchen.
ReplyDeleteGollum, my daugher was on your site this morning and she called me and said, Mom "I don't believe you told that story". Well I told her we share a lot of different stories on here. We where laughing about it on the phone. My daugher ask if I have every heard from her. I said no and I hope she is writing any cook books. LOL
ReplyDeleteGollum-
ReplyDeleteI do hope you do the Trainwreck again. I just remembered another hilarious (but potentially frightening) story for next time.
Lisa
I am sooo afraid to do the cooking posts. I did one and it was move this.. oh no you can see the loaf of bread, move the coffee out of the shot..too much morning light from the window! But I love to come to your house and others and see perfection, at least most of the time!
ReplyDeleteSilently laughing to myself throughout the entire post!! Been there - done that!! At least you have a really clean oven ;)
ReplyDeleteGollum,
ReplyDeleteAbout the oven and the potato, first I got out all the loose potato, and then I turned on the clean cycle. I will tell you that it stunk up the whole house! Not sure if it was the potato or the fact that it was the first time we had run the cleaning cycle, but it was not a good smell! Also, I made a tart with a butter paté crust and somehow the butter that was already mixed in the tart crust, oozed out the bottom of the tart pan and made a mess and a burning smell. Wouldn't you know that I had students from my French class arriving to taste a French apple tart and pee-yoo! Oh, well, these things happen : ) Linda
Well, I'm glad to see that your kitchen isn't always clean as a whistle!
ReplyDeleteDid you take my advice after the oven fiasco? Put aluminum foil on the bottom? Sure would have saved you a lot of lemons and baking soda!
Justine :o )
***GG girl, you crack me up~~~ and it takes GREAT SELF-CONFIDENCE to show all of that... I ADMIRE you even MORE~~~ you're REEEALLLY my "IDOL", & you don't even have to sing!!! And GLORIA'S ("HAPPY TO BE") note just cracked me up, too!!! (Been there, done that! Grins!)~~~ Love, Linda
ReplyDeleteOh my, your Trainwreck post is therapy for all the rest of us. Bad things DO happen to good kitchens!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, and hosting. What a fun blog party!
Cass
It is good we can laugh at our mistakes..and no one was hurt! LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting the party, Michael..loved the brush with the apples! Nice still life!
"practise makes perfect" is what I prefer to call my kitchen disasters, young bandwiths sauce reminds me of the day Vanni used the mixer and we ended up wiping bright red sauce from the ceiling and on top of the kitchen cupboards for weeks after lol. hope you pan survives, it does look delicious and what a gem he is for cleaning up after him (Vanni never does that :-). Happy Foodie Friday, Happy Spring and Happy weekend, hugs, Kathy.
ReplyDeleteI just took the wine truck down because I really don't want to offend anyone with my sometimes warped sense of humor. I didn't want your lovely blog to be associated with people who were offended. On that note, I think I will go pour a glass of Pinot.
ReplyDeleteThis has been such fun! I think I've laughed all day!
ReplyDeleteWell, all I can say is thank God I do NOT take PICTURES of my trainwrecks!!!!!!!!!! Would have never thought of that but now....well, be prepared:):) YOur tart looks glorious!!! I am hungry! Hugs, Pinky
ReplyDeleteLove this! We just wanted to say Thank you!
ReplyDeleteblessings,
kari & kijsa
I must say...that in some absurd way it rocks my world to know that you have trainwrecks too!
ReplyDeleteI thought I invented them.
I'll bet the tart tasted yum though!!
Good to know that you are a real girl...love the post.
ReplyDeleteOK! I am jealous! I do remember all the lambs jumping and playing! Oh, those little Y ears you talked about got me! Oh, to just look out the back window and see those lambs again! Hubby keeps saying no, he has enough to take care of! Well, he been working with Mississippi State University growing crawfish in a pond. He has thousand and thousands. I guess we will be building more ponds. I am still going to get my sheep and beloved angora goats! I just want a small flock. It is Spring and I know you are loving it, by watching all the animals on the farm. Yes, I am still jealous! lol
ReplyDeleteMy internet service at home is down, so I'm very behind on visiting blogs. I know you are so busy, but I have posted a few pix of Mary Gay & Paul's home, and I know they'd love to see a comment from you if you get the chance. Your train wreck looks delicious, and I loved seeing pix of the way your kitchen looks when you're writing -- kind of like mine looks all of the time! laurie

I'm glad to see that we share this---burning food while creative juices are flowing. I usually get so caught up in the meal, guests, and presentation that I burn the bread. Thanks for the smile and for hosting!
ReplyDeleteI loved this....it makes me feel better about my methods in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteOh NO! Best investment I ever made and only $18 was a roll of tephlon oven liner. Woo hoo easy clean up no matter what runneth over! I place it in the bottom of my oven and toaster oven. I will never live without it again!
