Met Monday: Breakfast Room Spruce Up

I love Metamorphosis Monday. All my food and design projects are in the "oh, it's a mess" stage. So I thought I'd show an oldie: the breakfast room's before/after.
Here's before.

After: I moved the draperies from the library and added panels.

Before, the room felt a little cold with all of the tone on tone. With the fabric scraps, I had pillows made.

I've read that neutrals are supposed to be better with tablescaping, but I have never given a flip if my dishes matched my draperies. Or even if the dishes match EACH OTHER. Life isn't matchy matchy is my motto, and it's my mom's motto, too :-)The day that dishes start having rules, I'm outta here, baby. It's back to paper plates.

Please visit Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for Metamorphosis Monday to see inspirational before and afters. See you there.

  5. Your Dining Room is beautiful! I have always loved those drapes! It's inspiring when talents like you tell us that we don't need to match everything - i.e., drapes to dishes or even dishes to dishes. I just keep hoping something will rub off on me from all of you wonderful designers!

Come to my blog if you want to see a serious snowfall!

  12. Love your drapes. That sure gives me an idea for my breakfast nook. I have almost a similar look and do not want to cover my windows completely because I like the view.
    Thanks for posting your pictures!

  13. I love this room--especially the windows and the bench! Your "leaning" paperwhites in your header make me feel a little better--yours look wonderful and I am always "fighting" mine to make them stand up straight and tall!

  14. Such a nice room, I am envious of the china cabinet too! I did mention before, but I will reiterate, I just love the drapes in conjunction with the arches of the windows! I only ever see the arches filled in with blinds or covered completely, I think the swags really let the shape of the windows shine through. Hope your holiday preparations are going smoothly and that you are getting some time for reflection & rejuvenation this season!

  19. There is nothing in your home that is not to love, Michael. And your breakfast room is no exception. And I agree with you about mismatching on tablescapes. I think it makes the table more interesting....Christine

  23. Oh yes, your breakfast room is wonderful, I love the colors in your curtains. And I wholeheartedly agree about not worring about being matchy matchy, my tablesettings reflect the moods I am in, not the surrounding color scheme of my room.

  24. What a treat to see your breakfast room. Love the photo of the sun streaming in across the table. It is all so lovly. The trio of photos in your header are very eyecatching. I'm taking the idea of the bread cutouts with the twig of fresh herbs. Great party idea!
Wishing you the best of the holidays! ~ Sarah

  32. Gollum, this really looks wonderful! It is such a sunny room in the day and looks like the perfect place to enjoy dining with family and friends.

If you see this, I have a question for you. I went to Publix tonight hunting for Mrs. Field's chocolate shells, and I looked in the freezer section to no avail. Where did you find them? I was going to do this for Christmas as I thought it was a fun recipe, but I can't find the shells. If you see this, can you drop me a line or leave a note on my blog and let me know where you found yours. I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Sheila :-)

  33. Michael...your draperies are beautiful here...I LOVE the fabric!
Well, I surely agree with your opinion regarding whether the dishes need to be neutral to go with draperies, etc...NO WAY! That is way too limiting for this girl. :-) Who makes up those silly rules anyway?
    Susan

  34. Susan, we'd have fun shopping together. Next time I come to your bookstore, we'll have to go dish hunting.

    Sheila: I emailed you.
Mrs. Fields dessert shells (chocolate) were found in the Christmas section at my Publix, near the chocolate covered cherries and foil-wrapped santas.
