A Kitchen Herb Garden, Bandwith's Photographs, & A Short Account of the Flood

My kitchen adventures have been in slow motion for a while, mainly due to illness and work, but everything came to a screeching halt last Saturday. The rain started early in the morning and soon the creek was threatening to spill over the road--thwarting my plans to attend author Lee Smith's book signing in Nashville. By 1 p.m., we were sticking every available towel under doors and windows to blot up the leaks. An hour later, the towels were heavy as watermelons, and my dryer was going 90 miles per hour. Around 3 p.m. we set out pans to catch drips. At 5 p.m., the basement ceiling caved in.
The rain continued to fall all day Sunday. We've been cleaning up the mess ever since--and counting our blessings because we got off easy compared to the rest of the mid-state.
Our garden took a beating, and my tiny patch of herbs washed away. So Big and I took a break this afternoon and bought a tiny kitchen herb garden at K-Mart.
It's totally cute, with three varieties of basil. I plan to keep this near a kitchen window--away from rain. We also bought two huge rosemary plants, which will go into the still-mushy garden. Eventually.
Bandwith has been playing with the camera--here's a look at the basil.

Bandy also snapped my new author photo with a 35 mm lens. I may use it for my new book, but Bandy wants several months to practice with the camera. Men. lol I'm hoping he will revive his food blog (hint, hint) and start taking pictures of his wonderful meals.

The mosaic photograph contest has been extended until next week, thanks to the screeching halt business. I miss tablescaping like crazy. I miss all of you.

I think the photo is terrific. You are a beautiful lady, inside and out! Used the Treble Clef flatware again this week for TT. I'm having so much fun with it. Thanks again for the thoughtfulness! ~ Sarah

  24. Michael, It is so heart wrenching to see and hear about the damage and destruction, I'm so sorry you have been affected, too.

Gorgeous shots though! Were they all taken with the 35mm? Beautiful, especially the author's portrait of you (except I don't give your Tyler ALL the credit on that one... he has a beautiful model to work with!) Absolutely lovely.

Thank you for hosting us in spite of the current challenges. I hope things are back to normal very soon.

  62. Michael Lee, The photo your son took is just beautiful!
Sorry to hear about your issues with the flood. Kenny Chesney's flood photos are posted online and it's a tragedy, for him and others who were living (too) close to the river. Being from Des Moines, Iowa I do know a little about flooding. In 1993 we had a horrible flood that flooded our water treatment plant and left the city without water for several days. We ourselves were fortunate and just inconvenienced. Good luck on your clean-up and your garden.
On a brighter note, today I received in the mail my own copy of Consuming Passions: A Food-Obsessed Life. I look forward to sitting down with it over the weekend!
