Mail-Order Ducks

The post office called at 6 a.m. and said, "We've got two boxes. One's honking, one's quacking. Please hurry."
I only had time to take one picture of the ducks before the heat fogged my lens. One duckling has a little crown of yellow feathers, rather like a hat from the 1940s. I'll have to puzzle out the breeds later.
On the way back to the house, I found a tiny feather and placed it on my writing tray (feathers, shells, starfish, rocks, etc).

We've had a busy, but interesting June--windows spontaneously shattering (well, just one), broken air conditioner, refrigerator on the blink. So far the score is,
House: 3, Michael: 0.

Like Mama says, "As long as it isn't something really serious--or a healthy issue."
Bandwidth has been complaining of back pain and had a CT scan today--poor guy has a herniated disk. Big says there's no treatment; not even physical therapy will help. Bandy played college football for two years before switching to rugby--a likely cause of the injury.
An hour later, Chef Trey called while driving to the hospital. He's having a CT of the abdomen (pain, high white blood cell count).
Fingers crossed for both boys.
More details tomorrow on Foodie Friday.

  7. Oh my - you do have a lot on your plate. Most important - hope Bandwidth & Trey have a full and fast recovery. Hope you are taking care of yourself with all the "stuff" going on.
I have had a major dose of "stuff" going lately, and know how the build up of stress can affect a person.
    Your new babies are adorable!
    Take care!

  8. I had a tufted mallard named Pickles - the tuft on his head is an abnormality. The other ducklings may peck him, and if that's the case, you will have to separate him or they will kill him. We had our mallard for a year and he was the sweetest boy!

  9. cute chicks. They really cant do anything for the disk?? I had 3 spinal shots for a herniated disk. It really helped. Sure hope things works out for both boys. Sorry to hear.

  10. Gollum! I'm so sorry about Bandwith and Trey having health issues. Tell Bandwith that Mr. Magpie has a herniated disc (his didn't come completely out... maybe a slipped disc). He is careful about what he lifts, but he does stretches that help some. He did undergo physical therapy which helped some. I'll find out and let you know. He hurt his by bending over a huge box of books that he lifted instead of lifting with his knees. Encyclopedias we moved from one place to another. He has to watch it, so he's careful. And please keep us posted about Trey! Prayers for both boys going up.

And on a different note, your ducklings... OH, how cute! And that little one with the fuzzy hat is a doll! Glad you had something to make you smile in the midst of things.

    XO,

    Sheila

  18. I love the little ducks. I once ordered guinneas by mail and it was pretty funny. What a hectic beginning to summer - sounds like life to me - my husband had a disc/back issue so he has one of those hanging upside down things and he says it helps.

  19. Hi Michael Lee...
    Your ducks photo is fabulous!
It brought an instant smile to my face!

    It's been a very busy May and June and will have a little extra time to visit now that school's out and the wedding is past... {with sweet memories}

Will be wishing for the best for the men in your life!

  20. Sorry to hear about your boys! I hope the ducks gave you a smile.

For what it's worth, our daughter (28) discovered she had a herniated disc last fall after suffering from back pain for quite a while. She loved to run and play tennis. Now that she has the pain under control, she found a good physical therapist who is helping her strengthen her back and abdominal muscles and she tells us it is helping. Not fun!

  21. When it rains, it pours. Hope both boys are feeling better. I guess Bandwith's disc will just take time and patience. You should name the duck Doris. It reminds me of a hat from a Doris Day movie :)

  22. The ducks are too cute! I have 16 baby chicks now with feathers and transfered to a coop. I bought 3 more cuckoo marans, and six silkies. Been sitting outdoors just watching them in the coop. Since I had a bad, bad fall, nothing much I can do. lol So sorry your boys are having problems, Hope they feel better soon!!! No fun fun when family is sick and all the major household things break. Wishing you all better days!

  23. Good Grief, Michael!! I hope all these men in your life get better quickly. First Dr. Big & now the boys...yikes!
Nurses know too much about all the awful possibilities. I hope none of your worries & fears come true.

Cute duckies, BTW! Hubby would say "Charnina on the hoof"...that's Polish duck soup! LOL
I'm enjoying your book Consuming Passions, very much...lots of smiles throughout.
