Foodie Friday and Copper Give-away

"All I ever wanted in life was true love, a set of copper cookware, and the perfect recipe for Red Velvet cake. The last thing I wanted was to end up on Charleston’s six o’clock news, accused of murder and a slew of other crimes."

-- Teeny Templeton, self-taught cook and trouble magnet.

So begins the story of Teeny Templeton, out-of-work Charleston "cake lady." The first bit of trouble in which Teeny finds herself is when she catches her fiance playing naked badminton with two other women, which compels her to climb a peach tree and begin hurling peaches at him. Needless to say, the engagement is over, and her fiance slaps her with a restraining order. When he is found dead a few days later, all fingers point to Teeny. Her only hope is an old boyfriend-turned-lawyer, the guy who broke her heart a decade ago. But dredging up the past brings more than skeletons out of the closet, and Teeny doesn't know who she can trust. With evidence mounting and the heat turning tup, Teeny must also figure out where to live, how to support herself, how to clear her name, and how to protect her heart.

To enter the cookware give-away,please visit Teeny at my website, click on "books," and take a peek at Chapter One of Gone With a Handsomer Man. Then, on my blog, leave a comment, working in "peaches," "dog," "Charleston," or "cake." You can also look HERE.

The drawing will be held March 31, 2011.

This book should be a fun read!

  9. I love the bulldog's name.... it's straight out of a southern tale. Teeny should've hit all three of 'em in the privates with peaches LOL Looks like a wonderful book!

  10. Michael Lee,
I can't seem to click over to your site. I get an error message. But I see from the comments that the dog is a bulldog. Of course a perfect pick for Charleston and the Citadel Bulldogs! Charleston is my second favorite city in the south... Savannah is first. My son spent some time at the Citadel.Beautiful city for a book!
When is it published. My book club is going to read it.
What a fabulous giveaway. I love copper!

  15. Dear ML, I can't get to your page either??? It gives me an error thing too. I WILL go and read the chapter but will have to agree that the dog is a bulldog. I hope that will give me an entry/chance??? I haven't done a food post ever, yet. As soon as I get the nerve to do one I will link right up with you!!!! XO, Pinky

  19. Michael Lee, I loved it! Bulldogs are one of my favorite dogs, and Sir is a good name for one. I had a friend who had one named Chumley, and he used to cry/whine like a baby when he wanted something. It was an otherworldly sound.

I like the fact that you set this story in Charleston and Mt. Pleasant... my sister lived there for many years and was an Episcopalian. I also like the fact that Teeny grew up on a peach farm in Georgia, and I'm glad she pelted those nekked jerks with peaches. LOL! How appropriate.

Oh, and I also loved the fact that he wanted her to make the wedding cake as a golf course with tiny little sugared balls. LOL! I have a friend who has more money than sense, and their wedding cake was his house. His groom's cake was his boat (one of those fancy speedboats). They really were pretty neat, but everything he does is neat.

This book sounds like a winner. Can't wait to read it. Is it coming out in hardback?

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  20. This first chapter has definitely piqued my interest!!! When does it come out?

I am still laughing about Teeny tossing peaches at the naked jerks...and the nether region? Priceless!!! I cannot wait to read the whole book. I'm gonna have to get a copy for my SIL...my brother was the QB for the Citadel Bulldogs...in Charleston (still one of my favorite cities in the south).

    Jane (artfully graced)

  21. Sir is such a wonderful name for a bulldog. :) Love the first chapter of your book! I look forward to reading the rest of it. BTW, I think it's just wrong for the bride to make her own wedding cake! LOL

  36. I have a daughter who graduated last year from the College of Charleston and a son who is going to the Citadel now. I love that your book references some of the places that I am familar with from visiting the kids in college. I'm going to have to get a copy so I have some reading on my next trip.

    ReplyDelete
  37. As an avid reader, I was hooked on the title. I am going to have to get my book club to read this! Could I convince you to Skype with us when we discuss it?

Okay, Charleston and cake, two of my favorite things!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love the line about there not being canary in the coal mine for cheating men!! I just bet that those two skanks have never baked a cake with or without peaches!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Now, Michael, that first chapter just takes the cake! That fiance is a dirty dog, and I cheered when Teeny got him right in the old family peaches.

Okay, I got nothin' for "Charleston."

But I love your style! I blush to admit that I have not read one of your books yet, but I'm going to have to fix that soon.

Happy New Year, from a location that is not Charleston.

  43. Congrats on the new book! I'd love to have a set of copper cookware, I love to make braised peaches with brown sugar and a brandy, making it in a copper skillet would make me feel like real chef! :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Loved the chapter one excerpt. Can't wait for the book. I only hope that some of those 'peaches' weren't ripe...that way they'd do more damage!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am in awe...I can't even write a decent grocery list, let alone tell a story that brings the characters to life!
So, I am sitting in my kitchen, wondering if Teeny will be okay in jail and who is going to take care of Sir while she's gone?
As an aside, I am adopted and I am wondering if I could be related to Teeny, for it seems we share the same magnetic attraction to trouble! LOL!
I hope the blankets in jail aren't too itchy! (Don't ask me how I know...)
    I've never flung peaches, though.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I look forward to reading your next book! Here's to hope:

A Charleston "Dog"(my favorite is Rhett Butler): cad, beast, boor, jerk, scumbag, rat fink, swine, vermin, sleazeball, snake, and my daughter's personal favorite, jerkhole.

A Charleston "peach" (such as Teeny): Beauty, the cat's meow, the bee's knees, humdinger, daisy, dandy, jim-dandy, standout, doozy, and doll.
; )For a sweet cake, pop over to my page and look up voodoo, butterfingers, & cake. Cheers!

  47. Michael Lee, this one has me eager for a copy. It would be a good choice to take along on my next visit to Charleston. Have to find a dog sitter for my new little English bulldog that Santa brought me. I named her Peaches. Peaches is the "icing on the cake" for a perfect holiday! ~

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love the name Teeny. I once knew a woman from Charleston with a similar name, just throw an "s" in there.

Peaches remind me of my grandfather, who used to drive south and load the bed of his pick-up level full. Then, we'd can and cook till we dropped. Peaches in cake was only the tip of the iceberg. (And the local school mascot just down the road? A bulldog!) :)

Can't wait for this book. I'm so eager now.

  50. Hi Gollum/Michael! (Happy New Year!) I just got the NookColor (E-book) and I CAN NOT wait to download your new book in April.

Teeny sounds like a bit of a character, being a southern girl from Charleston with a bit of a self-esteem problem...

Old Pervy Bing should have been glad that Teeny was hiding in a Peach Tree instead of a Rock Garden! LOL... Too bad she didn't have her copper pots with her, she could have "El Kabonged" him with the pan! (LOL)

Sir... The Bulldog put me in the mind of Mister. (By way of name only!) I sure hope Teeny gets to take him home once she gets out of jail. Hey... that Red Velvet cake would come in handy at a time like this.... especially with a file in it! LOL

I'm wondering if Teeny will ever take those classes that Bing gave her for her birthday???? (I doubt it... who has time when trying to beat a murder wrap...)

    Donna :)

  57. So bummed I can't get to Teeny. Long live the queen of Charleston! You ask how she got the title? Oh easy, as she was walking her dog Peaches, she spotted a man of ill repute. She found herself in a quandry.. just what to do? She couldn't possibly give up the peaches in her basket, they were destined for a cake. She did the next best thing..

  58. Only 10 weeks to learn how to decorate her wedding cake? I would be nervous, but Teeny didn't seem to be! Can't wait to read more.

Well, I haven't been here for a visit in a dog's age...college applications for my youngest. (sigh) I read "Mermaids.." this past summer. We had been down south to Savannah-(next time Charleston)! I loved that book and I have not read a satisfying book since! Can't wait to read about Teeny! The excerpt is so intriguing! "Even though it was still daylight, the moon was on the rise, moving through the clouds like a dropped pearl." Really! Your writing is as delicious as cake! Love the name "Sir" for her bulldog!

  107. It was during a long weekend in Charleston I had an adventure. I walked everywhere; taking in the crowded dog park, the fragrance of freshly baked cake at the patisserie, and eavesdropping on numerous political discussions during the warm evenings. Dacquiris made with fresh peaches bolstered my courage to accept the invitation from the man at the next table at the outdoor cafe to join him for dinner. It made for a much more exciting weekend and left me with numerous fond memories - a little something for my middle-age musings. Seems Teeny's story stirred up my own!

  108. Michael Lee,

I do love Charleston’s gracious air of Southern civility. Passing by the grand old homes, I think of how those deep, shady front porches provided welcome respite from the stifling heat of dog day afternoons. Fanning themselves, drinking iced tea … or something even more relaxing … dogs lazing about at their feet. Thinking how good that cool, fresh peach cake Cook is making is going to taste tonight … drifting into unplanned slumber, thinking of handsomer men and forbidden games …

Your new book sounds wonderful! I watched the video, requested a Kindle/nook version, and “liked” it on Facebook! Definitely a Facebook novice here, but I’m learning. I included a recipe in my tablescape post this week, so hope to see you again on Foodie Friday!

    With admiration,

  111. Loved the first chapter..giggle.. and I do believe nothing could be finer than being in Charleston with a slice of red velvet cake. I hope Teeny finally gets one made.

  112. Since I just came home from Charleston, your book has really piqued my interest. I can't even come close to describing the beauty and charm of Charleston. It has become my favorite city.

  113. Gosh Michael, I've never been to Charleston, I don't have a dog but peach pie was a discussion on my daughter's facebook page yesterday. As she announced Happy Pi Day, she was encouraged to make a Peach Pie and the discussion ensued with wonder of where she would obtain fresh peaches in Alaska...?

Can't wait to read your book!!! Blessings, Shay

  117. This looks like a hilarious story. What's not to love about a book set in Charleston, a lovable bulldog, and 2 of my favorite passtimes--eating cake and peaches in my homemade ice cream. Yes, I'm a little on the southern side!

  119. A senic setting in Charleston and mister bulldog, and the wedding cake at the house is a recipe for pure desaster! I can't wait to read the book.

  120. I would love to visit Charleston and have Teeny give me a tour!

You are one of my favorite authors and I am thrilled you have this new book coming out. I can't wait for the follow up!

  121. What a beautiful set of copper pans. What a "peach" of an idea to have a giveaway. I'm afraid if I baked a "cake" in those pans, it wouldn't even be fit for a "dog" to eat.

  122. I live in "Charleston" and can't wait to read the book. I think the cover is one of the cleverest I've seen. I'm glad you choose that one, though they were both cute. Then I looked at some of your other book covers and they are just as clever. Thanks for the chance to win.

  123. Being a former resident of Savannah, Charleston is another charming town I love to visit. Know exactly where Mt Pleasant is and some of the other streets and landmarks you mentioned. You really make the words jump off the page.
If I won this giveaway, I'd bake a cake to celebrate and be happy as a Georgia peach!

  124. Honey, I hope that tree was full of peaches and that Teeny was a really good aim. Bing should have to sing for that one!

  128. As far as I could see Teeny had two dogs, one named Sir ( a true gentleman) and one named Bing (of those ankle biting rat variety). She should have taken those peaches and baked him a cake and called it the Charleston Peach Cake, and used exlax as it's main ingredient. You could have been sure he wouldn't have been running around naked with the girls swining raquets, the only thing he'd be doing naked is running for the toilet....swinging Toilet Paper.
