14 Steps to Happier Cooking

Welcome to the February 11 Foodie Friday.
It's almost Valentine's Day, and I've been thinking about how matters of the heart and mind are bound together--much like combining flour and oil to make a roux.
My mother says that a kitchen is much more than appliances and counter space--it's a laboratory for life. Food is one of man's basic needs. A cook is a philosopher and a scientist--with a nurturing soul. Mother says when we assemble ingredients, be sure to add a positive attitude (and kick your internal critic to the curb). What lessons have you learned in the kitchen? How do you cope when the cookie crumbles? Will you please leave a note and share your favorite life's lessons?
Here are a few things I've learned:

Wonderful video! So many simple truths. I also love your mother's kitchen philosophy. I think happiness breeds happiness and it's so important to keep a positive attitude, even when life hands you curve balls.

Hi Michael-fun video! The kitchen has taught me that even when baked goods are less than stellar, they're still a hit at the office:@)

Love your mother's philosophy! Cooking or baking is like a free therapy session for me ~ clears my head and really helps my thoughts.

Thanks for always sharing such wonderful ideas!

It is always better when I consciously cook with joy in my heart for the ones I am about to feed. I had a little note in my Dove chocolate once that said to do things with love and I hung it inside my spice cupboard... Great reminder:)

Thanks for hosting.

Hi Michael Lee! Oh, your mama knows best! Love the video and you for hosting this party! I'm not worthy to hook up with you, but hey, here I am! :)
My tip...do not open that oven door when a cakes baking in there. Do not! I repeat - do not do it!! Well, if you want a little cake bird bath go ahead! :)
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Hi Michelle Lee!

Thank you for hosting this lovely party. I will definitely twitter some of the other link ups!

I am so sorry I accidently posted mine twice, and I apologize. It's the Nutella Lava Cakes if you want to delete one of them off. I didn't see where I could do that myself.

Thank you again...now off to visit some of these great recipes!

Goodness Michael Lee, I was thrilled you liked my post today.. coming from you it was quite a compliment.

Me on the other hand... spaced out leaving a comment here... Petunia (the St Bernard) got all fussy and off I went. What I was going to say is that the video says what needs to be said. Even the worst disaster in the kitchen teaches lessons and if you serve it to good friends (and have a great take-out place close by) well you can all laugh about it. Your mom was right and the internal critic is your worst enemy... a lead weight on your heart and creativity!

Hello Michael Lee,
I LOVED your video, it was so moving and inspirational!! Thank you so much for putting it together and posting!!
I am off to tweet about it now ( I need to have my older son put the F.F. badge on my post, I use wordpress and I can never figure anything out...but I did link it ...) I am also trying to motivate Oliver to post on your blog soon about his making crab filled raviolis, it was so much fun, perhaps he will do it next week!??

Thanks so much for your comments. Your kitchen lessons are wise and heartwarming! I am going to borrow Heather's idea and put a note in my cupboard: "Do things with love." All things, not just cooking. XX00

When the cookie crumbles, by my own misspoken words or actions, I'm learning to ask for forgiveness asap. When another "crumbles" my world, I try to give them grace as well. Love the metaphor of life and cooking.

I've always believed that the meals you prepare for your family are only as good as the love you put into it...as is life!

Oh Michelle, Thanks for sharing your momma's cooking 'advice' with us today. I found it VERY heart warming!!

One of my "I could kick myself over" worst experiences, happened this year in the morning of Christmas day. I got up early to start baking pies. I was baking four different types to take with us that afternoon to the in-laws. I've made at least a hundred pies before. I strove ever so hard to conquer the technique due to wanting to be as good of a cook as my maternal grand mother had been.

But you would have never known that Christmas morning. Bother!! I could NOT get the dough to stick together for anything! I could get it to roll out, but with in 30 seconds of trying to pick it up, it would fall apart like it was a thousand piece puzzle! Ever so frustrating. So with much annoyance (and far more time than I had planned on!)I piece-mealled those crusts together, filled them, and baked them. That is, until the last pie . I didn't have enough crust made up for both the top and bottom of the blueberry pie. So after having piece-mealled the bottom, and filling it, I mixed up some more dough to make the top piece - only to discover my original mistake. There was no little measuring cup out to reuse to measure the water. I had never added the water to the original multi-batch of pie dough. OH MY GOSH!! I could not believe it. And yet, it was such a relief to find out that that was all it had been! Reassuring to know I hadn't totally lost my touch. That top crust came out like a breeze.

From now on I'm likely to measure the water before I do anything else. o;-p

Great thoughts on the video.. i think my most important lesson, well there are two.. it's not all about me and the second equally important is that it's usually not as big a deal as I make it out to be..
thanks for the party.

Great video and post. I just want to know where do you find the time for all the things you fit into your life with only 24 hours in a day, 24/7, 365 days a year. I know! You don't sleep, do you. Love your blogs and the posts. And thanks for all of your wisdom. I always take something away with me when I visit.
