How I Find Time to Blog and Write

Last week, I received an avalanche of email from people who wanted to know how I find time to blog and write novels.

"How do you find time to maintain three blogs?"
"Where do you get the energy?!!"
"Do you ever sleep?"
"Do you have full-time help or an assistant?"
"Is your publisher/assistant/son writing your blogs?"
If you've been following DBG for the last few years, you know I'm a spotty blogger. Sometimes it takes all my effort to post once a week--it's especially difficult when I'm writing the first draft of a novel.

But I dearly love blogging, so I took a hard look at my available time and found a few ways to post, even if I can't do all the activities that makes this avocation so much fun.

To read my answers to these questions and to learn time-management and blogging tips, visit
http://acquaintedwiththenightbypipermaitland.blogspot.com/2011/06/finding-time-to-blog.html. The post is short but crammed with ideas that will (hopefully) make social media a bit easier. But it's a daily struggle. What works one day might not work tomorrow.

There are a whole slew of writing tips (look on Piper's sidebar), too, like The Rule of Three, Why Writers Should Study Chickens (I'm serious!), and the creative process.

To enter the Kindle contest, follow this blog and leave a comment. Tell me how you manage your time--or leave a blogging suggestion. What works for you?

For extra chances to win, follow Piper's blog and leave a comment. You can also enter the contest at The World According to Teeny and vote on the polls. (Teeny has several fab contests going on, btw. Check under the contest tab on her blog.)
The Kindle contest ends July 10, 2011.

I know I would have more time to blog if my hubby wasn't retired and HERE all the time!!!!!!!! I know I could manage my time better but, oh well, it is not to be! You still amaze me. Truly! XO, Pinky

I forgot to say how I manage my time. I keep two books: one is my calendar book with room to write in appointments, plans, etc. & the other is my list book where I write errands to run, phone calls to make, jobs to do. It does keep me organized but I still run out of hours each day.

I have to be honest - I am no good at managing my time! I'm always scrambling around, trying to get things done at the last second. I think I need to read the article you linked to...! :)

Great post Michael! I enjoy all your blogs, even though I am unable to visit often.

I will click the link for the time manaagement tips. I definitely need those. One would think I would have all the time to do whatever I want, because I do not work and J is retired. However, we are busier now than we ever were before he retired.

I am a follower...after many years of trying, I still haven't found out how to successfully manage my time. I admire anyone that does.

I really need to cut back on computer time. I can spend much of a day just reading blogs and following links! I have started jotting notes for blog posts when they are fresh in my head. But it doesn't really come together for me until I am actually in Blogger and typing. All your blogs are wonderful and your photos are always right on! xo,

I'm new to blogging, and although I'm not very good at it, I enjoy doing it and love the learning process. It's kind of like singing - even though I can't carry a tune, it makes me feel so good! Your tips are great. What helps me manage my time are To Do lists. I try to stick to what is on my list for the day, and I get a lot of satisfaction checking things off as I go.

I'm of course a follower and I have to say I'm lovin' Gone With a Handsomer Man! I started reading it pool side during our vacation :)
I haven't been blogging a year yet but I'm finding the best way for me to blog is to sit down for an hour or so at the beginning of the week or Sunday evening and just draft all the posts I'm wanting to do that week and then set them to publish on certain days and time. If i'm linking to parties then I just find a little time that day to link up and check other blogs out too!
I surely don't have it down to a science and have been playing hit and miss a lot lately but it seems to be the best working situation for me!

I've discovered you via Yvonne's place and I'm so happy I did. All this and a chance to win a Kindle? Wow. How do I find time to blog when I'm a jewelry designer...I make time for what is important to me and eliminate the un-necessary time stealers, like people who have nothing to do but call you on the phone while they are driving and the entire phone call they tell you about what THEY are doing, never even ask if you have time to talk.

When I figure out how to manage my time, I'll let you know. I'm nocturnal and a multi-tasker. I can't stand to do one thing for more than about a half an hour, so I move from project to project, and get a surprising amount done this way, unconventional though it may be. Even when I watch TV I'll have a notebook beside for jotting down lists, my iPod for following the ball game, and a book to read during commercials.

I'm a long time follower.

I started my blog in May and still learning how to navigate in blogland. I love, love having a blog, I stay up to the wee hours of the morning a couple days a week. I never dreamed it would take this amount of time to post, visit other blogs and to esp. link to parties. I find the small details a pain but the joy of seeing my finished product or visiting a new site for the first time is terrific. This is a learning process and I need to pay close attention but it is challenging to learn the details of blogging and taking a decent photo. I learn best from helpful tips and feedback. Kathy

Give up sleep. But seriously, it is hard to find the time to blog and to keep the focus on blogging. Sometimes I just get tired but I have to push myself to add pages to my blog. And developing my buy books smartphone app takes time away from blogging.
