Welcome to the August 5 Foodie Friday.
I've been thinking about peaches this week, and I shouldn't be thinking about them (or any kind of fruit) because I'm on a low carb diet. I've lost 8 pounds, thanks to the diet that author Lori Wilde recommended.
I'm not craving peaches, exactly, just thinking about them.
I'm not craving peaches, exactly, just thinking about them.
Specifically, I've been thinking about food and writing.
Making a peach pie is, in a way, a metaphor for blogging--and revising a novel.
Making a peach pie is, in a way, a metaphor for blogging--and revising a novel.
You can't dump a bunch of ripe peaches into a pan and call it a pie.
You can't dump a bunch of pretty words into a Word file and call it a blog post or a book, either.
Revision is a time when I examine those pretty words and scenes. In a novel, if words don't move the plot forward, they've got to go.
So I cut them out and take a hard look at the scraps.
My figurative rolling pin does its best to smooth out the rough bits.
My figurative rolling pin does its best to smooth out the rough bits.

As a cook, my mission is to find the right crust for the right pie.
It might be a traditional lattice crust.
Or a rustic peach pie with a sprinkling of almonds, nestled inside puff pastry.
Or something totally different and tarty.
Writing a blog post (or a book) is similar.I must find the right words for the right sentence at the right moment.
And it's a critical moment.
Anyone who has made a pie, or written a blog post, will know how this feels. Me, I write in longhand--I must feel the words as they take shape on the page, just as I must feel pie dough when I'm crimping the edges.
I seldom make a decent crust on the first pass.
My tenth effort might not be pleasing, either.
A blogger is constantly reshaping and reVISIONING words and content (rather than revising). ReVISIONING is a new way to visualize an old problem.

We, as cooks and bloggers, are constantly learning how to make better pies. The best way to do this is to make a lot of pies and be willing to throw away our experiments.
When we are learning, nothing is wasted.
Because the point isn't to peel a peach, throw it into a pie crust, and call it a dessert.
We, as cooks, have an inborn need to create something delicious for our family and friends.
It's an emotional thing.
Not in a show-offy, competitive way. Not to bake a perfect pie. Not so people will beg for the recipe.
This isn't about hubris. It's about love.
It's an emotional thing.
Not in a show-offy, competitive way. Not to bake a perfect pie. Not so people will beg for the recipe.
This isn't about hubris. It's about love.
Our pies are gifts that we shape with our hands and hearts.
We want these offerings to "hit the spot," to leave our friends happy and satisfied.
Hopefully your pie will be well received.
But you'll bear one thing in mind.
From the beginning of your journey, you understand that your pie isn't a "one size fits all" sort of pie.
From the beginning of your journey, you understand that your pie isn't a "one size fits all" sort of pie.
Your pie won't please everyone.
I've never made one that did--and I never will.
But here I am, still in the kitchen with sticky fingers and flour spilled across the table.
I'm waiting for the moment the oven timer dings, waiting for the moment when I bring the pie to the table.
When I finish one pie, I'm already thinking about a new one.
Here are a few questions:
Do you cook for yourself or for others?
Do you do both?
Is this activity mixed together like pie filling and crust--separate yet together?
When you write a blog post, your words and images are metaphorical pies, cakes, casseroles that you offer to your visitors. (And, for food bloggers, REAL food is offered, too.) What keeps you blogging? Does it satisfy a place in your soul--like a good cup of coffee and a big slice of pie? If you had to stop blogging, would your life change? Would you change?

I believe that I cook and blog for both myself and others. With me they are very much related. Both are an outlet for me, a place to express my creative musings. I enjoy cooking for the family as well as myself (The kids just don't understand the reasoning behind a good summer BLT or Caprese salad). When it comes to blogging I do hope to inspire someone to step into the kitchen and realize it's not that difficult to cook for the family, guests, or even dinner for one.

PS... Love the peach inspiration. Aren't they amazing this time of year?!
Wonderful pie! My hubby and me love all pies, but our vary fav is the pineapple pie I make! I will soon make one, take a pic and share recipe...really, it's yummy!
Thank you for hosting, I have no recipe for this menu, but nothing you might not do very well! FABBY
I cook a lot for myself, mostly because of the empty nest, and my Man travels. I am happy to say that I have not changed my philosophy or approach when cooking just for myself, I deserve a nice meal rather I eat it alone or with family & friends.
I guess I blog with the same approach, I try to post something that is helpful, or informative most of the time... however there are times when I'm sure nobody but me cares how pretty my hibiscus are on any given morning.
Thanks for hosting.
I am going to make that peach and almond puff pastry pie tonight, it looks delicious as do all your yummy photo's. It will be a challenge as we are in Temp accom (tiny oven and hardly any pots and pans) awaiting our new home here in Texas.
Have missed your posts and really enjoyed this one.
Have been updating my blog with inspiration photos :-).
Hope your writing is going well, Kathy xx
Reasoning why I cook, in simplest forms, is because I need to eat. I didn't grow up in a family where money came easily enough to afford eating out...we grew things, my dad hunted and we ate the meat. Old habits die hard, I guess, because I rarely eat out anymore. Plus, I feel the strong desire to nourish my family. Cooking gives me the pleasure of knowing that I'm truly feeding them. I love the act of cooking for allowing me the privilege of feeding loved ones, conjuring memories of those who've passed, and creating memories for future generations.
I blog to keep my sanity. ; )
A scrumptious and mouthwatering blog.I buy Publix frozen peach pie, looks just like one of the pix.Not bad, either. You lost 8 pounds? Congratulations, that must have taken some willpower. May we expect a photo of the new you?
I cook for myself and for others. I like the challenge of making a new dish and sharing with friends. For me, cooking is relaxing. It is a creative outlet in a sense and that is supported further by the blog.
Blogging satisfies my need to create~ sort of cyber merchandising, a carry over from years in retail & visually telling a story. It's always satisfying when the by-product, food or images, is something that pleases people! I never dreamed it would be so caloric though :-)
Honestly, when the day has just about been all I can take, the idea that I can go home and be in my own kitchen...whipping up something magical....it just makes everything better. I cook for myself and my southern beau (who compliments everything I put before him) and we enjoy trying new recipes together.
I've been making a peach/onion salad that is divine! Different, but really good! xoxo
I love to bake for any reason, even if it's for myself or others! It makes me feel good knowing that I created something special. I wanted to share my creations so that's when I started my blog :) I love your beautiful pictures!
Love the term "revisioning". This is a great, thought provoking post. Me? I blog and cook for the creative outlet it provides me. I've had this blog for two years this month. Though it is very time consuming, I can't imagine giving it up. I've met so many wonderful friends along the way that it's worth the time.
Thanks for continuing to share your creative spirit and your wisdom, ML. ~ Sarah
I love to cook, and my cooking blog has been a way for me to share that with others.
I enjoy the creative process of both cooking and writing, and the fact that I get to play around with my camera is an added bonus. Although my family think I'm a little strange because I have to photograph everything before I eat it. :)
Thanks for hosting - that peach pie in puff pastry with almonds looks delicious!

Oh, what a great post about pie and this hobby we call blogging. My husband sarcastically dared me to blog and said I wouldn't do it. I did it just to prove I would and then I found all that creative stuff I had been ignoring to take care of a home and children. Which can literally bury your soul. Now, I have a creative outlet and it is fun. The kids seem to be inspired by it too. It makes them look at what they love a little harder before they are all grown up and they forget where they last saw that desire in themselves.
Thanks for having us!
Sherry
Really good post Michael and beautiful pictures...both the basket of peaches and the luscious pie! In our house, everyone cooks...my kids are in their early 20's. Sometimes we cook for each other and sometimes just for ourselves. I tend to cook what makes my husband and I happiest...comfort food is often on the menu.
Wonderful analogy, Michael! I do tend to cook things that I think I will like and hope my husband and family likes it too :) On special occasions, I will make something I know they love.
WOW! YOU KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF TODAY!!
I care for my elderly father, which can be frustrating, tiring, and mentally exhaustive. I've always enjoyed writing and I find now that it is my escape and my therapy.
I sometimes "cook" for others and sometimes just for myself. Usually, I allow the inspiration, words, and ideas to flow freely. That's why you never know what you are going to find going on at my blog and why it is called A Musing Potpourri. Haha! My main goal is to make it a fun place to stop for a moment or two.
Stop blogging??? I can't imagine.
Great, GREAT post, Michael!!
I cook and blog for myself and others. I like to try new recipes, but I use a lot of my old ones too. Blogging is fun, I enjoy it and look forward to what I will be posting next. My Kindle arrived today.....Thank you so much Michael! I will be giving it to my Mom and she can't wait to try it out:)
I cook for both myself and others. What keeps me blogging... I call it my creative outlet. I love it despite being a horrible author.
Your peach pie is to die for! Mmmmmm! Our Peach season is in May. I made jam and peach glaze and canned it... but... I also froze bags of peaches just for an occasion like this! Thanks for the inspiration Miss "G"!
Oh.... I cook for others. I know this because when hubby is out of town... I have cereal, a can of soup or a meal I froze or take out. I defentaly cook for others, including my blog... I love the MMMMmmms!

First, I need to find some peaches... I cook/bake because I like to eat! Can be for me, others or the blog. I think of the blog as an entertaining hobby, both writing mine and reading others. I do have to chuckle when my sons ask "can we dig in or do you need a pic?":@)
Wonderful post, dear one.
I am now so dang hungry for a great crusted peach pie, I could die.
I love cooking and blogging. Blogging came at a wonderful time in my life..retired and at that time in my life when I have more time to do the things I love doing..blogging and baking.:)
So, I do blogging for myself..cooking for Mr. Sweet and myself.
xoxo bj
I cook for my hubby and for others. We belong to a dinner group and I LOVE participating in that: making the food, setting the table, ENJOYING the company of our friends! It is wonderful. Loved your post! PIE is my favorite, apple or peach! Can't bake to save my life though:):). XO, Pinky
Your musings can be applied to painting, too. I am constantly striving to perfect my skills...and I know that there are those who will love my paintings, and those who will not even spare them a glance. That's ok...I do this for ME! I feel the same way about blogging...It's a wonderful outlet for thoughts, writing, etc. And I have made some wonderful friends through it.
As far as cooking...I love cooking, at times. Sometimes I just cannot be bothered...usually when I am alone. But now that I am trying to eat more healthy meals, I make an effort to prepare them for myself...and my husband, when he's in town. And I LOVE weekends, when the kids show up to eat...
Jane (artfully graced)
I tend to cook to please others. I need feedback and after each meal my husband and I critique the dish. I blog primarily because I enjoy the interaction of others who love food as much as I do. I hardly ever prepare anything I don't like, unless it's something my husband requests, and then I do everything possible to make it the best I can. But there's hardly any food I don't like, so that's not a problem.
BTY, I love peaches almost as much as I love tomatoes. In fact I combined peaches and tomatoes in a couple if dishes recently with excellent results. It's surprising how well they go together. I hope they are back on your diet soon.
Great post. You've make us really think about why we cook and why we blog.
Sam
I love your comparison, and you've really got me thinking about how I can reclaim the passion I have for cooking and apply it to my blog! I cook for myself and my family because I feel it's so important; having dinner every evening is about so much more than food. It's our time to connect, share, model and teach. I certainly have moments when I treat my blog the same way, but as it's a decent source on income, I see it more as "work," especially right now with the kids home for the summer and me avoiding the computer to play with them.
Puff Pastry + Peaches = Paradise! :)
I always thought I was just cooking for myself, just for the love of cooking, but cooking for others is a huge part of it. When my husband was out of the country for a while, my love for cooking died down a bit. I still loved it, but not being able to share it with anyone and then talk about it later (especially if it was a hit) takes away some of the pleasure.
Yummy Pies....makes me want to go bake one now. I cook for myself but am inspired to cook for others...it's my way of showing love...silly right, but true.
A lovely rolling metaphor.. elegant and apt. I cook for me mostly... to discover to experiment to experience flavors. It is just like writing in so many ways. It's about clarifying a vision... communicating with the world, others and yourself. Rough or refined it's the best you can make it. Either way, you can usually walk away from the table satisfied.
What a thoughtful post, ML & such beautiful photos, too.
I definitely cook for others. I wouldn't bother if it was just me at this house. I work hard at creating balanced diabetic meals for DH & am always trying to come up with new & interesting food choices to wet his appetite (which isn't very good these days). Me? I'd be happy with a run through Wendy's! LOL
Thanks for doing FF, which is where I get almost ALL of my new recipes.
Hugs,
Rett
what great thoughts - I cook and share. Lately, I've cooked sweets and we've eaten a serving from the cake or whatever it may have been and I have sent the remaining to my husband's work. The guys there have really enjoyed the treats. Joining Foodie Friday today, but unfortunately my linky picture did not appear after cropping it. :(
What a lovely thought provoking post!
I loved reading this post, Michael. Thank you!
I love that last photo of the peaches in the chair also...beautiful photography as usual.
Nancy
Oh, forgot to say...I cook mainly for others but definitely for myself to.
I blog because it does satisfy something deep within and to surround myself with others that have similar interests. If I had to stop, I'd definitely feel something was amiss.
I can't imagine life without blogland! ;-)
Nancy
A really great post, fabulous photos, I really want a slice of that pie! xo

Your pie looks so yummy. It takes talent to make a crust like that! I'm joining in this week with a Foodie film. :) Love the pie metaphor for writing. And now I'm craving peach pie...wonder why? :)
Michael, my sister just told me that she read your Gone with a Handsomer Man and loved it! I said, I "know" her! ;-) So I had to come link up today after being away for a while. Great post! Well, when I'm writing posts just "for me," they come so easily. I really never know how exactly they'll end up. But when I have a task to complete, they become different animals and sometimes "beasts." Still, I love blogging ... the writing and connecting with others. How lucky we are, too, that we're writing through our food experiences :-) Peach pies, chocolate beer muffins, etc. ;-)
Shirley
The cake looks so delicious but I will never try to make it. I listed your recipe in my cookbook, It will helpful for my birthday party. It is very easy to prepare in short time.
These are really delightful colourful treats and photographs. I also like to add mint and chestnut, strawberries and cream, vanilla and salted caramel, too delicious.
Do you cook for yourself or for others?..IT'S JUST ME AND MRNEVERLAZY!
Do you do both? YES!
Is this activity mixed together like pie filling and crust--separate yet together?YES,IT'S AND ADVENTURE!
When you write a blog post, your words and images are metaphorical pies, cakes, casseroles that you offer to your visitors. (And, for food bloggers, REAL food is offered, too.) What keeps you blogging?FUN! Does it satisfy a place in your soul--like a good cup of coffee and a big slice of pie?I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THAT,A GOOD CUP OF COFFEE AND SLICE OF PIE IS PURTY DOG-GONE HARD TO BEAT! If you had to stop blogging, would your life change? YES,I'D PROBABLE GET MORE CLEANING AND YARD WORK DONE! Would you change?..NOPE!..I'M THE SAME OLE "JO",ALL THE TIME!
Thank you so much for hosting :)
Hi Michael,
Your questions have been so thought provoking that I have waited until now to comment. Cooking is a creative joy that I have the opportunity to share with others. The entire process of creating the food and sharing with others becomes a spiritual part of me. Blogging has become an extension of that process. It has given me a sense of community that I feel a part of and am able in some small way to contribute to the happiness of others in that community. Blogging has changed my life and it would be very sad if I had to give it up, because it has already changed me, and given back to me more than I ever dreamed could be possible. Thanks for this beautiful post and hosting a great party!
Miz Helen
I love this post... I so relate to the blogging experiance and ideas.

i have found in my 40-some years of cooking experience that the rolled up, ready-made pie crusts in the little red box are about the most perfect pie crust for any pie.
