Kindle Giveaway
Is it cold today in your neck of the woods? I had to put on boots and a wool cape to walk the dogs this morning--and I saw frost on the pumpkins. Today I'm cooking pinto beans, Dr. Dirty's favorite, but I'm making them in the Crockpot (for the very first time--not sure how this will end).
I hosted a Kindle contest over at Piper Maitland's blog, and Foley was the winner. There were only three entries, so Kathleen (Cuisine Kathleen) and Mary (Home is Where the Boat Is) will be receiving some culinary goodies from me and Piper.
A few of you have not responded to the Teeny contest. Kitchen Witch, Jane, and Lynne's Gifts from the Heart. Just email your address, and I'll mail your prizes, ladies. Email teenytempleton@gmail.com
I'm hosting another Kindle giveaway to celebrate the upcoming release of Acquainted With the Night, a novel that reviewer Harriet Klauser called "an action-packed Brownian," as in DaVinci Code, Dan Brownian (but with vampires). It's very different from the Teeny books. Just saying. In this novel, I pulled from my nursing background to focus on the science of vampirism. Of course, there's a mystery, too, and a quest (to find pages from an 8th century manuscript.
Back in the winter of 2008, I'd just finished a book tour. I was just about to quit writing for good. So I decided I would write one last book, a book I'd always wanted to write, something very different from my Southern wacky stuff. Somehow, in a way I don't understand, AWTN restored my joy in writing.
Anyway, if you'd like to enter the contest, just click on the "like" button on the Amazon product page, then leave a comment to let me know so I can enter your name into the contest. The drawing will end November 15th. I will be hosting drawings in November and December so you'll have several chances to win! Here's the link:

Zap, my newly-diagnosed diabetic Yorkie, is doing some better, but he has a long road ahead of him. The vet had to raise the insulin to 3 units (twice daily). We just can't seem to get Zap's sugar down. I have made dog food and dog treats, all from great diabetic doggie recipes. So far, I've made chicken-and broccoli, stew, more chicken, and a meatloaf for the humans, and one for all of the dogs (ground turkey, chopped carrots, broccoli, parsley; egg), and that was a hit. The diabetic dog cookies were also a big hit. I give Zap a midnight snack of lo-fat cottage cheese and turkey when the insulin peaks, to prevent his blood sugar from crashing.
I have found another recipe that calls for ground brown rice flour. I'm worried about Zap. As a former RN, I should know all of this stuff, right? I don't know anything. But I am going to try my best to learn for Zap's sake. I'm reading Sugarbabies right now, a great guide to canine diabetes. I still feel lost, though. Right now, at my husband's suggestion, I'm measuring Z's food. I'm trying to make sure he gets the same amount of exercise each day. At this stage, we're just trying to find the "sweet spot" for his insulin dosage. If I feed him too much, or foods that are high on the glycemic index, I can cause the little guy major problems. I've been hearing horror stories about insulin comas, so I bought a bottle of Karo syrup. I'm hoping I never have to open it.
Thanks so much for all of your warm wishes for Zap on Foodie Friday! I am grateful for your stories about your diabetic pets. If you have any recipes, please let me know! XX00

Sorry to hear about Zap's troubles. Hope you can get him on the right track soon!
Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
I have been MIA for a while, human health issues in the family. Will have to read back on your posts about Zap and hopefully some recipes there for our elderly cocker who has to have the same diet. Sugarbabies, hadn't heard of this book but checking it out. Thanks Michael for sharing the information that helps many of us...hope Zap is feeling better! I "liked" at Amazon, very much!
Michael, I'm still praying for Zap...I hope once you go through the trial and error of the medicine it will be smooth sailing. That's we had to do and thankfully we are on a good path now :) I "liked" the book on amazon too.
Poor old Zap! I have a grand-dog who is diabetic, something I know about being one myself. They have to give her shots every day. I'm type 2 so I control mine with diet and tablets. So much worse for children and animals.
Hit the "like" button.
Hope Zap is doing better...
I have finally corrected all my Amazon info..and have "Liked" Acquainted with the Night. I look forward reading it...

SO sorry to hear about your Zac...I've been absent for some time on Foodie Friday because I'm doing a big purge of stuff and I'm also trying to loose weight. Like your Zac...it's always a struggle to find the right things to eat. Best wishes! Fondly, Roberta
Congrats on the book release and I've just shared the Amazon link and giveaway on facebook as well. Thanks for a great giveaway!
I'm continuing to send you love and prayers for Zap. My Scrappycat had thyroid issues and it seemed to take us forever to get her meds adjusted just right, but once we did, she was so much better.
Thanks for the wonderful giveaway. I liked Acquainted with the Night.

I clicked on the like button. Hope I did it right. I would love to win a Kindle for my husband who is on his 51st book already this year. We keep track of books and authors in a book so that we don't get confused. Yes, we are major readers and yes, I have read all your books. Thanks for an opportunity to win.
By the way-hope Zap does well on his new diet. We do love our pets, don't we?
So sorry to hear about your Yorkie. I know oatmeal is good for human diabetics (it actually absorbs glucose) but not sure if it would appeal to a dog's palate. Also, avoid carrots. Too sweet.
I liked your book on Amazon.com. Great giveaway. xo
Awwwww! I have an elderly yorkie who is having some troubles lately. I'm sorry to hear about Zap.
I liked the product page on Amazon!

First, Thank you so much for the Kindle. It is actually my birthday today, so it is a great present!
Secondly, I hope you're able to get Zap'a blood sugar under control and things get better each day. Being an animal lover I have an idea of what you're going through.
Thanks again!
I certainly wish I could wave a magic wand over Zap and make him better. Having had absolutely no experience in this realm I can't offer any advice other than lots of hugs :)
Congratulations to Foley!

Hi Michael! You do the BEST giveaways ever! This book, AWTN, sounds extremely interesting! Would it give me nightmares?!?!LOL
I just hit "Like" on the Amazon.com site ~ hope it does wonderfully for you. I so enjoyed the first Teeny book and I'm sure this different type will be equally intriguing.
Very sorry to hear about Zap's health issues. I've been taking my precious little JRT, Sissy, to a specialist for months now. Congested, snotty nosed, coughs, had tons of x-rays & MRIs, a rhinoscopy (expensive), scads of new meds, a few reactions (scary) and yet nothing definitive. She's 12, so I'm certainly not ready to give up, but it is disheartening to feel so helpless with those we love so much. Hope you soon find the "sweet spot" that makes Zap completely whole again.
Big TX Hugs,
Stephanie

I never thought about buying a Kindle but thanks for the opportunity to win one, I'm sure my son or daughter, maybe even grandson would enjoy it.
I hope Zap's bumpy road smooths out soon. Sick doggies make sad doggie mommies. :(
