Welcome to the February 3rd Foodie Friday!
The Shop This Room Series is a new feature at Designs by Gollum/Rattlebridge Farm. I will attempt to deconstruct beguiling, gorgeous rooms and "shop" them. Virtual shopping is my favorite kind. Today's inaugural article features the beloved kitchen in the film "It's Complicated," starring Meryl Streep. Her character's kitchen plays a major role, too.
Unlike the One True Kitchen (OTK) in the movie "Something's Gotta Give," the "It's Complicated" kitchen feels like home, and it doesn't take anything too seriously--except food. This is a cook's kitchen. Everything has a dual function. The marble island is perfect for rolling out pastry dough, but it is also a place to dine. The butcher block cart features pretty glass canisters, and all of the baking goods are in a handy location. Herbs and fruit serve as edible decor. How nice to pinch off a bit of rosemary from an herb pot that sits in your window and just sprinkle it over your chicken casserole.
The white dishes are lovingly mismatched--serviceable and handsome, as only white dishes can be. The shelves hold cake plates bowls, glass domes, and jars. White cups sit atop an espresso machine. The items in this room can be bought at pricey boutiques, of course. Or you can look for similar items at Home Goods, Walmart, Target, yard sales, and Goodwill.
The joy of shopping this room isn't recreating it to the last detail. Rather, it's fun to borrow elements that call out to you and make you smile.

The charm of the "It's Complicated" kitchen is the laid-back, come-give-me-a-hug sort of look. However, when I began checking out similar items, I was shocked at the prices. Even the lookalike pieces I found aren't bargains. But if you see something you love, a little real-life shopping trip might turn up an item that you can refurbish for a fraction of the cost.
If you're like me, you'll probably have more fun going to tag sales and Goodwill to collect white dishes. But it's a good idea to have one or two 16 piece dish sets. If you have room, a basic, 48-piece set can serve as the foundation for your tablescapes. I've got a couple sets--American Atelier, Mikasa, Villeroy and Boch. My "Gollum" dishes look exactly like my Mikasa Italian Country dishes, but they came from Big Lots. I use them every single day. Depending on your area, you can find bargains galore and beautiful dishes at the Dollar Store and Big Lots. The sales at Home Goods are exciting, too.
Farm tables are getting hard to find, but I still see primitive pieces in dusty shops and estate sales. Old tables can be topped with a marble scrap--most granite places have a graveyard of odd slabs, and they will cut it to fit your table.
Finally, it goes without saying that it's cheaper and more satisfying to plant herbs from seed than to spend a fortune on a ready-made pot.
Well, that was a fast, fun shopping trip. It's time to kick back with a chocolate croissant and a cup of espresso.

You may have noticed that DBG has undergone a "fluffing." It has a nickname, Rattlebridge Farm, in honor of our farm-to-be. Upcoming posts include house sprucing, cottage gardening, building a chicken coop, and making an island in the pond for the ducks/geese. As always, you'll find easy-peasy, carefree recipes that might appeal to exhausted people.

I loved that movie! I'll just take the whole kitchen :)
Love the new look and hearing more about your new home and renovations to it.
I think this might have been the funnest Friday ever. I love shopping for things and half of the fun is in the hunt. I study Pottery Barn catalogs and find similar looks (now that I know what I'm looking for) at Wal-Mart, Target and as you said, tag sales. Thanks for reminding us that shopping and putting together a look can be fun and not as expensive as it looks.
I brought a Lemon Arugula Salad with Roasted Carrots and Parmesan for a lazy day lunch with a glass of wine. Then you're set to hit the yard sales, oui?
Love your farm name. Has a nice ring to it and love the new format too. Noticed it the other day. Great job.

What a wonderfully fun post. I hope there will be more like it. Love the new format.
I am loving this "new" blog/format. Loved shopping this kitchen and I still need a SET of white dishes. So wish I had bought the "Gollum" dishes at BL when they were available:( I just gave our daughter and SIL a farm table for their new house that is being built. Have a fabulous weekend. We leave in the morning for Fl. XO, Pinky
I loved that movie and all the sets, especially the kitchen.
You have a great new look and name.
I thought I was at the wrong place at first. Thanks for hosting so we all have a chance to get some new ideas for recipes.
I adore the kitchen from "it's Complicated"! And the kitchen Garden as well! I love the shop this kitchen feature. How fun it is to shop for a kitchen. =)
Have a wonderful weekend!
It was fun having a look at the kitchen! I'm glad we finished out kitchen, so I won't be tempted to find things I'd love to have. How far are you moving from your current home?
Oh Micheal - your makeover is absolutely scrumptious!!! Happy FF to you and yours.

Today I’m linking up my Portobello Pizzas and Banana Bread Muffins. Drop by Fusion Fridays at jennifercooks.com and link up your goodies! Thanks so much for hosting
Great of you to sing the praises of the film designer. I think the best ones don't just make pretty but make home that looks like it belongs to the character... warts and all. Takes a lot of work to make things seem lived in... gone are the Brady Bunch days of set dressing. Great examples.
I enjoy the "Shop this kitchen" idea!!
Love the new look -- so clean and fresh. Look forward to hearing more about Rattlebridge Farm -- the name is quite picturesque. Brought Egg in a Mug today, the perfect thing for exhausted cooks!
What a fresh & exciting new look to your blog, ML! ♥♥♥ it!
"Rattlebridge Farm" sounds lovely!
I'm with you...the fun is in the hunt for the bargain or the do-it-yourself version of an overly priced item. I love a good sale!
Thanks for hosting FF again & again & again like you do. I know how busy you must be & I appreciate that you still take the time to do this so we can all share our recipes. I use SO many of the ones posted here each week.
fondly,
Rett
p.s. How can I pre-order your new book that is coming out soon...
"A Teeny Bit of Trouble"??? I can't wait to read what she is up to next!
Thanks so much to everyone for the warm, encouraging emails about my Yorkies. Mister, Zap, and Murphy had a good week. Mister hasn't vomited in 2 weeks--but he can't eat anything but the rice gruel and chicken diet. Zap is a real trooper. The world is a scary place for a blind dog, but he is doing so well! Bless his heart, he holds so still when I give him insulin injections and take blood samples. It's as if he knows the medicine helps. I'm enjoying every single day with them.
Rett, you are so kind to ask about Teeny. I have been so heart sick over the sick puppies that I haven't updated my website. I better get busy. Yikes. ATBOT can be pre-ordered online at Amazon, B*N, Books A Million, Powell's, or your local bookstore. I don't have a link but I'll add one to my sidebar.
