Renovation Diary: Quick Bathroom Update

The remodeling stopped for two weeks, so I've had very little to report.  My general contractor participated in a local building Expo, but his assistant tells me that next week promises to be exciting. The new front doors have arrived, along with the accent window. The kitchen lanterns will be hung, too (I'm a little worried about them; the ceiling outlets appear to be too close together, but I've been assured that it's an optical illusion. That said, I wouldn't be me if I wasn't worried about something).

Despite the slow-down,
we managed to paint the master bath vanity.

Here's a quick recap of the progress:
Photo 1, far left: We began with yellow walls and speckled granite counters that enhanced the orange tones in the tile floor.

Photo 2, center: The walls were painted SW's Macadamia. Restoration Hardware sconces and a mirror were hung.

Photo 3, far right: I'm still in a flux about the paint, so we tried SW's Thatch Brown on one vanity. It's almost right. But the good news is, we're seeing brown tones in the tile floor. No orange! Yay!

In person, the vanity (SW Thatch Brown) is a bit light. I'm trying to decide if I should glaze over it (you can see a large example of this color below) ...

SW Thatch Brown

... or if I should paint the cabinets a shade darker,
SW Umber (see below):

It's frustrating when a project moves this slowly. I'd hoped to have an "after" photo of SOMETHING to show you by now.
All I have is a "before" and a "midpoint."

My bathroom won't look like a Restoration Hardware bath (below), but the photo has surely inspired me. I'm looking for new knobs, possibly pulls, which will mean drilling new holes into the drawers, but it's worth a shot! A much bigger window on the right side would balance the room...but I'd need a couple of estimates before I went ahead with this extreme idea.

Still don't know if the speckled counters will stay or go.
What do you think?
Would white marble (or a cream granite) look better?

Someone mentioned painting the cabinets black:

Hope you're having a great weekend!

  1. I think it is the granite that is giving you problems...it really is a beautiful bathroom.

    1. I had a feeling the counter was wrong, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for helping me get to the bottom of this!

  2. I agree with Marigene. Beautiful space! The color of the granite is what might be the problem, not the floor. Good luck with it. I've been through s-l-o-w projects. It's very frustrating.

  4. I love the mirror, the sconces and the vanity. And I think the counter till has to o and I think the tile floor looks fine. Just what I think. It's looking gorgeous.

  5. Looks beautiful! It very well could be the counter top. I think if it were lighter it would present a very different look.

  6. Hi Michael Lee! Oh, I love your painted vanity. I know nothing but I think I agree with the others that maybe it's the counter top. Since you're the richest one, poke a slab of black granite up there! :)
Don't stress too much - you're too pretty to get brow wrinkles like me.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia :)

    1. Black counters would bring the room together. Great idea!!

  7. I totally love the mirror and sconces. And like everyone else, I'm not too keen on the counter top. I have a three day weekend and should be cleaning my house, but I'm taking too many breaks, "Hunting Daylight" :)

  9. Michael, it looks great in the picture, to me! I love how it looks with your wonderful mirror and sconces! Can't wait to see the doors and window in place. Will the exterior shutters go up after that? I know you're getting excited! :)

    1. Can't wait to see the shutters! My contractor wanted me to use a local supply company, but they don't do operable shutters. I found a company that makes them, selected a style and shutter dog, but can't get my contractor and the company together. Will keep trying.

  10. It's coming along beautifully! I say change the countertop, either white or cream will work. After that, then make you decision if you should darken the vanity anymore!

  11. The painted vanity is fabulous!! If you add some coffee-tone paint and charcoal-tone paint to glazing medium and go over it, that may add the dimension (like the mirror finish) that you're looking for. I use BM's Color Capture app-- with a photo of your mirror's finish, you may be amazed at all the shades picked up....then pick 1 or two of those and add to glazing medium to achieve that 'aged' finish.
Your idea of marble counter tops would be stunning! Not only will it eliminate the "fight" going on with the speckled granite, but the natural GRAY veins in marble will even further erase any orangey vibe going on in there. Your bath (along with the rest of your home) will be warm, sophisticated, gorgeous and INVITING!!

  12. I would change the counter top to cream or white too. I think that is what is bothering you. I love the floor. I like the color of the cabinet right now but a shade darker (OR blck) would be gorgeous!!! IMHO:) XO, Pinky

  13. It really looks beautiful...it seems like everything is starting to come together nicely...I love the vanity color...I think you nailed the RH look!...

  14. Love the color on the cabinet. The mirror and sconces are stunning. I really am not a granite fan. To much pattern on the counters gives me fits. Looking at my home you would never in a million years think I just said that. I have so much pattern and texture all over but in the kitchen I love a simple white marble look.
I like the idea of balancing the windows with a larger one to the right also. Now, what kind of window will it be? Can't wait to see what you come up with. Have fun.

  15. Your bathroom is halfway done, but it looks wonderful as it is. What I love most about it are the windows! By the way, are you planning to change your tiles too? I can’t wait to see your bathroom once it’s done!
