Foodie Friday -- July 18th

Welcome to the July 18th Foodie Friday, where good food is always on the menu.
Just when summer heat got too hot to handle, middle Tennessee was blessed with cool, springlike weather. It was the perfect time to weed and mulch and take stock of the garden.

Some plants are thriving and some are puny.

My huge lavender bushes succumbed to last winter's bone-snapping weather, and my new crop was hidden by a volunteer pumpkin vine.

I keep thinking it will engulf the house, Grey Gardens style, but Will adores it.

Here's a look at last year's lavender crop.

Lavender Peach Salad

Lemony Lavender Vinaigrette will get you through a long, hot summer.

You can find the recipes HERE.

Last week's most-viewed recipe at Foodie Friday was a quintessential summer side dish: Grandma's Potato Salad, submitted by Meatloaf and Melodrama. The texture is perfect, and the time-honored ingredients will please the pickiest palate.

The second most-viewed recipe came from Home Is Where the Boat Is, a do-not-miss, stunning tablescape, along with a delicious tomato tart and tomato gorgeousness. Mary's centerpiece is one of my favorites.

Picture Perfect Cooking's "Favorite Fruit Dip" brought the third most-viewed offering to the party. Her recipe is the perfect ending to a summer meal--fresh and refreshing!

Be sure to check out other popular posts, including Grandma's Summer Camp at  Miz Helen's Country Cottage. Here's a darling photo, an instant smile-maker. What a cutie!

Don't miss Wives with Knives' "Old Fashioned Apple Pie," including a tutorial for a two-crust fruit pie.  Just look at it. Oh, my! Flaky, browned to a perfection, and garnished with pastry leaves.

You can find last week's Foodie Friday recipes HERE. It's an awesome collection.

  1. Oh wow I am first this week that was a complete fluke! Just sat down at the computer to check a few things. I had planted turnips last fall and they weren't able to do anything before the harsh winter and I had never grown them so, I thought well I'll try again sometime. Today I am looking at this "weed" and I grab the base and pull and surprise I had a turnip! I have 4 more volunteer turnips and I am going to leave them till frost and then see what I get! I love surprises!

  2. I loved lavender week last summer! I can't wait to revisit all those dreamy recipes~I hope your new crop thrives, last winter took such a toll on our Southern states :( Thanks so much for the party and happy gardening!

  3. Hi Michael Lee,
What a fabulous surprise, thank you so much for featuring our precious little garden Angel, we had so much fun with our Grandma's Summer Camp. I always enjoy coming to Rattlebridge Farm on Friday's, thanks for a great party!

  4. I can smell the lavender deliciousness from here! I just unearthed some lavender sugar I found buried in the cupboard this week! My lavender is puny and anemic after our winter here too, and I love your robust volunteer pumpkin vine :)

Thanks so much for sharing my tomato centerpiece! I hope everyone is healthy and well fed at Rattlebridge Farm. ♥

  5. My lavender didn't come back from our winter, either, Michael Lee, and I never replanted it. I'm with Will in loving the!! All the features are fabulous and thank you so much for hosting. xo

  6. We are experiencing a welcome cool wave as well. So glad the rains are gone. They were't doing our tomatoes any good. Your lavender is so pretty. The harsh winter got ours and I've just about given up on it.

Thanks for hosting and I hope you have a lovely weekend.

  7. Thanks for hosting this most delish fun party. I could look at your beautiful photo's for hours. Great features. And I love the pumpkin vine, and I see you are soon to have a pumpkin, happy gardening, have a tasty foodie fun weekend.

  9. Michael Lee, Thanks for your inspiration and for hosting Foodie Friday.

I think the winter took it's toil on many plants. Our trees even have lots of dead branches and with high temps and little rain leaves are falling like autumn. Hoping for rain this weekend.

  10. Thanks for hosting! I’m sharing ACD-friendly Chocolate-covered Cherry Macaroons. It’s the best of both worlds—raw macaroons and chocolate covered cherries!

  11. I'd love to join Consuming Passions on Pinterest...thanks.
Thanking you for the party too, I love this food party even though I don't post much food, although I'm always cooking and baking somehow, lol! Have a great weekend ahead.

  12. I know, this weather is wonderful! A few of my lavender plants survived last winter, but they are really struggling. I also lost my lovage, which I doubt I will ever find again at a nursery around here.
