House Tour: Dorset Manor

This Sunday, we're headed to England's West Country, to a manor in Dorset. I was instantly charmed by the elegant foyer, with its stone floor, cane-filled basket, and the boots (of course).

According to the interior designer, Emma Sims-Hilditch, the house is:
". . . a Grade II Listed Manor House in the heart of the rolling Dorset countryside. Our aim was to preserve the patina of the past, whilst seamlessly mixing in a modern aesthetic to create a more comfortable and elegant family home. With the house dating back to 1200, we wanted to celebrate the traditional interior whilst providing an open, light living area with the introduction of a contemporary glazed garden room and kitchen "

The quiet elegance continues in the foyer. Any house that has a purple tartan runner
on the staircase has my heart, but when you add a Chippendale staircase railing and more boots,
I'm smitten.

2015 is supposedly the year that color returns, but I plan to ignore that edict. After fighting with my bold colors (and seeing them swing in and out of style over the last eight years), I'm looking forward to neutrals. It's so easy to add color and warmth with the seasons--and repainting won't have to happen again in my lifetime. :-) Below, Emma Sims Hilditch has added a lilac-and-cream checked ottoman (nicely echoing the staircase runner), and she has brilliantly mixed leather and linen.

Stone floors throughout provide an unbroken "5th" wall -- the floor. The 10th century dining room has been updated, but it retained its low, utterly beguiling ceiling. The dining area is open to the kitchen.
Bespoke cabinetry--and lots of it--create a kitchen that's functional and attractive. Do I see an
Aga in the background?

Blue wallpaper envelopes the room in a cheery sort of quiet, one that is quintessentially British.
The original beams add a sense of history--look how long they've lasted, a testament to the craftsmen who built the manor.

In the bathroom, you can get a better look at the wallpaper--"Oriental Tree" by GP and J Baker.

The La Chapelle basin couldn't be more perfect.

Storage has been tucked into every available space.

Another guest room celebrates the colors in the Union Jack--red checkered draperies; blue-and-white striped, padded headboards, Union Jack pillows, and reversible checkered quilts.

The tour ends in the laundry room. I myself want to linger here and check out the boots and the Bespoke cabinetry.

After the tour, be sure to grab a berry scone...or two.

  4. I love this house, Michael Lee, especially the soft blue colored wallpaper in the Master bedroom and bath. I don't think I'd tire of it. I also loved the sweater type afghans as bedspreads in one of the guest rooms. I'm with you in going for neutrals. Color can be added, at whim, with accessories. Thanks for the tour.
