Kitchens of the Great Midwest: Edible Review with the Novel Bakers

I'm teaming up with the Novel Bakers to introduce the best book of the summer, Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal (Pamela Dorman Books). Before it even hit the shelves, the debut novel garnered praise from the publishing industry: it's an August 2015 Indie Next Pick, the July 2015 #1 Library Reads Pick, and a Summer 2015 American Book Association "Indies Introduce" Pick.

Last Minute Remodeling Decisions

Some remodeling decisions are effortless. Others make you want to put a cold rag over your eyes. However, the intrepid home decorator must forge ahead. You know, make a decision and stick with it. No prevaricating. No "what ifs." No do-overs. Well, I'm trying to be decisive, but it ain't easy.

Renovation Diary--Mid July Update

With our renovation deadline approaching, everyone is doing a mad dash to finish the interior--painters, electricians, plumbers. Everything is moving at warp speed, and I can barely keep up. When this journey ends, I just want to sit on the porch with a giant margarita and relax.

A Trip to the Antique Mall

Long before antique malls existed, my mother bought Limoges and Fiesta for pennies at junk stores and yard sales. But the best bargains were found at country auctions. Usually these events happened on the weekend, and we would set out early of a morning, gripping a tin picnic basket--inside, my mother had tucked a thermos of sweet, minty tea, fried chicken wrapped in napkins, and homemade pecan-chocolate chip cookies. Today, I found myself yearning for the old days, and I headed down to the local antique mall.

True Confessions: I Am Not a Paint Color Ninja

Painting brick to match cedar shake is a job for a fearless Paint Ninja. Unfortunately, I'm not that person. I've been told that the shake on our house will not weather all that much (indeed, when I looked at other houses in the area, their shake hadn't "aged").

Black Painted Interior Doors: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I'm not a paint color ninja. I don't power through the selection process, confidently dealing with undertones and 50 shades of white. Rather, I'm like a delicate, newborn kitten, looking at swatches through squinty eyes. When it came to painting stock, interior doors, I danced around dark paint colors. (Actually, it took two home renovations before I worked up my nerve.) First, I tested a not-quite-black charcoal BM color on a bathroom door. Everyone loved it.

Blueberry-Basil Galette in a Cast Iron Skillet

Music can be found within the cuisine of the American South.
I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, a place of fog and fiddle music. It's no wonder that I developed a big love for bluegrass, knee-high weeds, and country cooking.  But once upon a time, I had my doubts.

In the Gutter: Part 2

When it comes to home renovations, things can change profoundly in 24-hours. Yesterday, I was pondering gutters and dormers.  That evening, DH and I decided to go with a bronze, standing seam roof for the dormers and half-round bronze gutters--if my GC could find half-rounds. This morning, when I checked my e-mail, I saw a message from Medana, the project manager. The subject header said, GUTTERS. For some reason, those all-caps seemed ominous. I grabbed a jelly donut, then opened the e-mail.
