October Evening in the Butterfly Garden

I love October's temperature extremes. A hot-as-blazes day can turn into a crisp evening, prompting me to reach for a lightweight sweater. This is the month to play in the yard, to relish the pure joy of being home on a sweet night. What could be better than a marshmallow roast?

I asked the menfolk if they were in the mood to eat disgustingly sticky, unhealthy food over a little campfire, and they said, "Bring it on." I gathered chairs and strung lights in the tall burning bushes. I left the fire to the guys.

"Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it,
and if I were a bird, I would fly about the earth
seeking the successive autumns."
-- George Eliot

Jasper's job was to examine the pumpkins.

Then he retreated to the sidelines with Bandwidth.

Wrapped in a blanket, the stars above us, a sweet chill in the air, the taste of marshallows cooked over an open fire -- pure bliss.

"In the other gardens
     And all up the vale,
From the autumn bonfires
     See the smoke trail!
Pleasant summer over
     And all the summer flowers,
The red fire blazes,
     The grey smoke towers.
Sing a song of seasons!
     Something bright in all!
Flowers in the summer,
     Fires in the fall!"

-- Robert Louis Stevenson, "Autumn Fires"

  6. I agree, Just magical. Love the Robert Lewis Stevenson poem "Autumn Fires."
We sit around a fire pit many evenings in the fall and winter. My husband loves a fire and we can't wait for a cool evening.
Your butterfly garden is so inviting with the festive lights and your seasonal pillows and throws.

Jasper looks so cute and he is a great little one.

I love Fall, now if we would only get some cool night before midnight I would light my outdoor fireplace.

    1. Jasper thinks his job is to be the Sergeant at Arms. LOL He sits in the window, just waiting for a squirrel or deer to scamper on his turf. Lol

  11. When we first installed our fire pit, we initiated it with S'mores, but have not had any since.

Like you, fall is about warm days and cool night here also, but unfortunately, the Santa Ana winds are here which make for hot nights (I have the windows open at 11:00 p.m.) and unfortunately fires all over our state.

    1. I've been keeping up with the fires on the news. I'm worried about friends who live in Wine Country. Our autumn has been awfully dry, and I have been worried about Gatlinburg. I hope our rain moves east!

  13. I could sit there all evening and I adore your cozy touches with the lights, throws, pillows and pumpkins! Jasper looks like he's enjoying an evening in the butterfly garden too. ♥ It feels more like August this week than October with mercury back in the mid 80s and high humidity. I'm beyond ready for a chill in the air and firepit weather!

    1. We've had similar weather. Lots of rain, heat, and humidity (but our trees and flowers needed water). It's pouring right now.

  15. Oh, how perfect! Your decor was so inviting and cozy and your photos captured it all so beautifully! I hope you have more perfect nights to spend around the campfire! Does Gladys come around when Jasper's out and about? Do they get along? I ask because whenever you post garden photos, Gladys is lurking about. :)

    1. Gladys comes and goes (someone in the neighborhood owns her), but she never joins us on walks. I'm not sure why.

  21. Magical moments in time... the photos are so enticing. I fear fire too much to even attempt this unless deep in the sand with the breeze blowing out to sea 😷
