Slice of Life

Simplifying and minimizing are the key words for 2018, but I'm not waiting for January1st. The last six weeks have been filled with household organizing and purging: I'm bringing order to every cupboard, closet, and drawer. Today, I'm getting the kitchen and pantry ready for heavy duty holiday cooking, and this weekend, I'll focus on the garage, creating zones for garden equipment and bird feeding supplies.

Perhaps a little order will inspire my messy men to be tidier.
Well, one can hope, right?

Every Monday morning, I plan the week--menus, appointments, and mundane chores. Everything goes on an erasable board. Again, this is for the menfolk. They like seeing dates and times in black and white. Otherwise, they get stuck.

I've also been thinking about the blog, asking a few questions:
1. What works?
2. What seems difficult?
3. What needs to stay?
4. What needs to go?
The answers are a little uncomfortable, even downright painful.
But necessary.

I never think of my quiet, personal blog as a stress-maker, but now and then, it inadvertently causes problems. This morning, I checked my email and read a message from someone who wants to do a guest post. "I've contacted you three times," she wrote, "and I'd appreciate a response ASAP." I sent a polite reply, refusing the opportunity. I suppose I need to add a tab to the menu, something like "Work With Me--Or Not," or maybe a "Blog Policy" tab? Because now and then, I enjoy reviewing cookbooks. I wonder, though, if everyone is pressed for time, even brands, and they don't actually read the fine print.
How do you handle requests that don't fit your blog?

Are you preparing for Thanksgiving and Christmas?
In my quest to live slowly, I won't put up the artificial trees until next weekend. And it's too early to set out fresh greenery. A tree won't go into the man cave, mainly because I'm afraid the dogs could eat an ornament. Jasper and Charlotte love to consume dust, leaves, hair, and paper bits.
When it comes to the tree, better safe than sorry.

Speaking of the dogs, Charlotte has grown a little.

Jasper is the Governor, always adorable and making sure the house runs smoothly.

Thanks for stopping by today.
See you soon.

  1. Gorgeous pics of nature and dogs! In terms of people emailing me to guest post, I get them daily. At first I replied to most of them. Then I put a simple notice on my blog home page saying I didn't accept guest posts, which apparently no one read. Now if I don't recognize an email address, I simply don't open the email. Yes, it makes them mad and they repeatedly keep emailing me. And I keep deleting. It is not my job to reply to unsolicited emails, I've decided.

    1. I agree! I just assumed that no reply would translate into NO, I'm not interested. And if someone bullies me about not replying, well, it won't end up with them guest posting.

  2. I could have written your post...and wrote something similar on my own blog yesterday! The need to simplify and slow down and 'unplug' from 'too much'.

I have had a couple of really pushy/nasty people, too, that want me to promote something or they offer to guest post. I just always reply politely that I only promote or review things for my own pleasure and not for gain...and then I thank them nicely for thinking of me and my blog and let it go at that. That is not what my blog is about..and it sounds like you are on the same page.

I hope you have a great day! xo Diana

  3. Beautiful pictures! I seem to be in the same boat as you...trying to live more intentionally and evaluating the blog and social media... Have a lovely day Michael!

    1. "Living intentionally." I aspire to that, too. I rarely bother with Facebook because they want to charge $$ before they'll show my post to followers. I may delete FB this year, as I truly dislike it.

  4. I'm still laughing at the things your dogs will eat! I love reading your blog for the diversity of content. Seems there is always something new to learn from you. I started my blog to communicate with my daughters, and I'm always surprised that people other than my family read it. I'm thankful for every single follower I have and some have become treasured friends. I've had offers from people, as you say, wanting to do guest posts. Frankly I don't think it's safe to respond to requests out of the blue like that so I don't. I consider it spam and don't reply, and if they're mad at me, I never know! Too many blogs lose the thing that made them special in the first place by catering to others instead of staying true to what inspired them to start blogging in the first place. Please consider how unique you are when you brainstorm changes!

  5. Pretty pics and your new babies are so darn cute! When I get those emails I delete them. Yes, they contact again and I delete again.

    2. Yet, Kim is so sweet and patient with her goofball followers like me. She was ever so kind and lovely when I bugged her recently. Love her.

  7. Simplifying feels so good and we've been working on that too. We just moved this summer and when I realized how much stuff had to be donated...well it made me a little ashamed. So I'm trying hard to really evaluate what we have before making purchases for the new house.

As far as those requests to do guest posts, I delete them.

    1. I rushed when we bought furniture for the man cave, and it's a big regret. It would have been better to wait and see how the room "lived." I thought it was bullet proof because I had a free design service from Ethan Allen.

  8. You are so right about blogging. Some people need to get a life.
Your pictures are beautiful and the colors are amazing.

I love the pictures of Jasper and Charlotte, they are darling.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  9. Michael Lee,
Your photos are lovely... rolling hills with touches of fall. And your two pups are adorable. As for someone DEMANDING a reply ASAP... where have all the manners, not to mention professionalism, gone these days? Unsolicited mail in any form does not require a response. Junk mail in the US Mail goes into the garbage can; electronic unsolicited mail goes to the computer trash can. Both versions are advertisements of some kind intended to benefit the sender, not the recipient. Please pardon my lack of manners for ranting. As I have aged, I have mellowed and try to be kinder and more tolerant than I was in my youth, but sometimes I fail miserably.

Have a wonderful rest of the week...

  10. Ooh such gorgeous fall scenery and hilltop views! Love that photo of Charlotte (and Jasper too) I'd never get anything done...more photos please! I'm always amazed at guest post inquiries...does that work for them? Gmail has a feature that might relieve your stress a bit. There's a 'report spam and unsubscribe button' that you can click and you never have to hear from them again. Works like a charm :)

  11. I have been on a purge/organizing kick for a while and don't seem to get very far, but I guess it's baby steps. I get a lot of guest post requests, and my question is, if they have really looked at my blog, they would quickly realize that is something I don't do! I tend to ignore or send a terse response. Your pups are such a shining light!

  12. Thank you for such nice posts. I enjoy stopping for a few moments to read them. I'm constantly amazed at the boldness of people and can't imagine asking someone to do a guest post!

I, too, have been simplifying.......going through closets, the basement, the bedrooms, etc. it feels so freeing! Have a wonderful day!

  13. Earlier this year I changed my blog name to reflect simplifying my life. Gorgeous pictures and sweet pups!

  14. For me it is easier to send a polite no-thank-you to unsolicited requests with the first email. Then I don't have to deal with the repeated emails as no response leads people to believe that the email got lost, so they'll keep trying. I totally agree, being rude isn't a way to act, no matter what. I just refuse to spend as much time on social media, I would rather be living in the moment and creating, taking time to appreciate and breathe. Jasper and Charlotte are just so precious, keep sharing their adventures!

  15. I love seeing Jasper and Charlotte, they are a cute pair! Beautiful photos! I never reply to the emails, I just delete. I am surprised they are sometimes hateful, still delete.
