Field Notes: The Wilder Side of the Hilltop

Most of the time, you'll find me in the trellis garden, pulling weeds and dragging hoses to the flower beds. Except for the vines and a few straggly roses, the area was a blank slate. I began with a yellow and purple color scheme, and it quickly became a free-for-all. The garden (and clay soil) taught me plenty. With next year's flowers in mind, I took notes and photographs, identifying errors and happy accidents. It's a messy garden, but it's not wild. Not one bit.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

I'm so glad you're joining us today. Pull up a rocking chair and tell me about your week. Earlier this month, I took a day trip to southern Kentucky to visit the Mennonite and Amish communities. I came home with happy memories and plenty of fresh vegetables.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

Let's get out of the blistering heat and relax at Foodie Friday and Everything Else.  It's so hot today, the news is warning people to stay indoors and crank up the a/c. Come on inside where it's cool. Pour a tall, frosty glass of your favorite summertime beverage and grab a slice of pie.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

I'm glad to see you this week at Foodie Friday and Everything Else. The Dog Days of summer have arrived a tad early in middle Tennessee. It's hot and dry, and my container garden hovers on the brink, always thirsty and ragged. But I'm not complaining, mind you. Summer is grand. It's vegetable and flower season, and when the mercury rises, it gives me an excuse to stay inside during the hottest part of the day, thinking about cool, refreshing dishes to serve. Grab a plate, a fork, and a tall, frosty glass of sweet tea.

Grilled Dessert Pizza

Warm summer days have a slow rhythm. They can't be hurried, and it's best to let them have their way. Summer also cries out for lighter entrees and frosty desserts. I love cobblers, but a dessert pizza was made for hot, lazy evenings. I imagine dinner on the porch, barbecued chicken and slaw, and the pizza. A fizzy peach cooler would be a nice compliment, but anything with ice and fruit would hit the spot. We don't need to turn on the radio. The night provides its own music. Crickets, bullfrogs, the far off hoot of a barn owl. Down on the lawn, lightning bugs appear, floating in lazy patterns.
Yes, indeedy. I'll make that pizza.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

I'm happy to see you at this week's Foodie Friday and Everything Else. Like many of you, I've planned meals around summer produce. I'm taking a relaxed approach to everything, from baking to taking photos. I'll snap a few pictures in natural light, and then we're ready to eat. For better or worse, here's what I've been up to.

The Mad Scientist's Peach Cobbler

I opened the paper sack and breathed in the sweet scent of peaches. What should I bake? So far, I’d made a grilled fruit pizza, a pie, and ice cream. I remembered a series of recipes I'd seen on Pinterest, and several had involved the unlikely mix of fruit, cake mix, and 7-Up. You've seen those recipes, haven't you? The ones that call for three ingredients? Or the ones that get a bit adventurous, deviating from an already strange procedure. I chose the latter route.

Grilled Arugula-Berry Pizza

The kitchen is a barometer of my well being. If I'm rolling out dough, I'm in a happy place. All is well in my world if I'm stirring, chopping, zesting, crimping, or peeling. If the kitchen is too clean, if I don't have a minor burn or two, I'm probably circling the edge of the abyss. But outdoor cooking is another domain. Grilling is the realm of Men. Fire, alchemy, smoke, magic.
