Gone to the Dogs

My 90-year old mother claims that I was raised by a dog--a Weimaraner named Cindy. Mom wasn't kidding. During my childhood, Cindy was my protector and companion, and if I whimpered, she'd dash off and find my mom. Dear Cindy bestowed a life-long love of anything with four paws (even three--in the 70s, we adopted a Chihuahua who'd lost her leg in an accident). So it's no wonder that I chose a dog theme for my Christmas tablescape.

Over the years, I have collected dog memorabilia, and this Christmas was no exception. The moment I knew a Scottie puppy was coming into our lives, I began gathering ornaments. Ditto for Westie goodies.
I'm not the only dog lover out there. The "Charlie" cookie jar is one of Pioneer Woman's items, created in tribute to her much-loved Basset Hound. I put Charlie on a cake pedestal and surrounded it with Scottie shortbread cookies. Below, I added ornaments and fresh greenery.
Charlie is too cute.

I fell in love with the whimsical dog mugs and plates at Pier 1. I remember seeing them last Christmas, but somehow I resisted buying anything. This year was a different story. I have an actual dog-themed tablecloth, but the pattern is itty bitty, I used a vibrant tartan to compliment the pottery.

I spent a Christmas in England, and I discovered the joy of "poppers."

I scattered dog ornaments on the greenery. Later, they'll go on a little tree for Jasper and Charlotte.

Little accents added a festive touch: Boxwood wreaths on the chairs, and a faux fur throw on the bench. If you look closely at the bench, you'll see a white stuffed dog--cutest thing ever. She hops around and plays "Jingle Bells." I found her at Big Lots for $15.

Jasper and Charlotte wish you a happy Christmas!

  1. I love, love this dog table for the Christmas Holiday. Simply gorgeous and yes, I too make tables with dogs, but never have a C'mas one. The plates are awesome and the centerpiece doggie is adorable!
We had a Cindy German Shepherd too when just married. I think your mom is right about how you were brought up by a dog, our small Pug Ben baby sat our first granddaughter. He would come fetch me when she walk up, or barked if she sensed something was wrong and Victoria loved him.
Thank you for sharing this amazing table. Pinning it.

  4. It's very cute. We had a similar dog when I was little. My mom would make 2 pieces of toast in the morning; 1 for me and the other for my sidekick....Tootalum...sounds like...toot a lum...don't know why the dog was named that...but, he was special. It's nice to honor the special dogs we have. I heard this: A dog might not be here your whole life, but you were for his. I liked that.

  6. I adore your tablescape Michael Lee...the tartan tablecloth is perfect showing off all the four legged puppies and Charlie cookie jar. I especially love the last picture of your babies....I have a tiny white pom named Jesse James and I don't know what I would do without him. He loves unconditionally and is always there for me. I saw the plates and mugs at Pier 1 and like you, I passed them by...but I have never forgotten them. I may have to go back and pick them up. Merry Christmas and it is always fun blog hopping with you.

The mixture of plaids and your dog-themed plates and mugs are perfect. They certainly wish I had a furry companion in my life too. The use of various textures such as the furry throw and boxwood wreaths are such a beautiful complement. Really a fun and festive table for Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  24. Michael Lee, This is by far one of the best tablescapes I've seen for Christmas! As a family of dog lovers, I'm swooning over this table. Both my husband and I had Scotties as children. I'm thrilled to have met you through this blog hop. Merry Christmas to you! Our Sadie wants to wish a Merry Christmas to Jasper and Charlotte!!

  25. Michael Lee...we must be BFFs but don't know it yet...anyone who would decorate a table in homage to our noble and loyal pups is tops in my book. I know those who gather 'round that table are sure to have a delightful meal and evening.
Merry Christmas to you, Jasper and Charlotte.

    Hugs, Lynn (and Flora)

  26. I came back for a second or third look at your adorable Christmas with the dogs table - and I noticed that my comment was not showing. I will try this again! I can relate to this table so well because we are a dog family.
My son has 3 dogs that they show - 2 Dogue DeBourdoeaxs and a new English Pointer. We have 2 dogs, and my sister is coming for Christmas and she joked about bringing her 2 dogs - so we would have 7 dogs here - none of them under 70 lbs.!!! So our Christmas really has gone to the dogs!! I bought the other set of dog dishes at Pier1- the Park Ave Puppies. I love all the cute little doggie details you have included as an ode to our loving friends! Charlie makes a great centerpiece, although Jasper and Charlotte are the real stars!! Merry Christmas to you all!

  27. Can I borrow those adorable dog ornaments, or at least the sweet Scottish Terrier one? Just kidding, but seriously what a unique and sweet tablescape. It is always neat to see something different and unusual, and so great that you had all these different pieces to tie the theme together. I also love your beautiful greenery, and the white faux fur draped over the bench. This is definitely an inviting tablescape, and thank you for being part of the blog hop!

  29. WE had dinner at Brasstown Bald in No. Ga the other night. One of their trees was totally done in Scotties and Plad ribbons. Thought of you!

  30. That is seriously adorable! I love the plaid base. Festive and cute. You can't help but 'eat happy' at this table!
I have the regular Charlie, (not the Christmas Charlie), along with the matching Charlie and Walter salt and pepper shakers. I plan to use them for Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day on my table. Collar and leash, dog biscuits, dog toy, and dog bowls at each seat. It's going to be fabulous!
